Michael Ende's "Neverending Story" is a childhoodclassic in Germany and is truly a great novel. After reading the HarryPotter novels and JK Rowling's imaginative world full of great ideas, I had to think of the worlds Ende creates in his novels, of his ability to bring together pieces of different mythologies and fairy tales and to create a witty book full of references, word play and ideas. This book should not have been made into a movie for it is an argument in favour of the world of reading and "the movies" that are created in your mind. It is very sad that Ende died some years ago and therefore will not be able to bring us more novels like this and I am very surprised that most of his other books are still not available in English.

Before Cornelia Funke's "Inkheart", there was another story which involved a character becoming a character in a book - Bastian Balthazar Bux and the book he jumped into was The Neverending Story.
Bastian is a bullied and deeply unhappy child whose mother has died and whose father is grieving so deeply that he is ignoring Bastian. One day Bastian steals a book from a bookshop called "The Neverending Story" and locks himself in the school attic.
The book he begins to read concerns a world called Fantastica which is under threat because its guardian, The Childlike Empress, is dying. The only way she will survive is if a human crosses over into Fantastica and gives her a new name.
Soon Bastian realises that he is the human being destined to save Fantastica and he is sucked into the imaginary world to save it. Suddenly his life is transformed - but at a very heavy cost...will he be able to get back to earth and see his father again?
A wonderful book, well written, which will grip you. I highly recommend this.
And now I am off to see the movie...

Usually, I don't really like fantasy books. But "The Neverending Story" is not just a story, it is an ingenious literal masterpiece. Once you have this book in your hand, you simply cannot put it down - I've read it in less than five hours.
What makes this book different from other fantasy novels is the sense of realism in conveys. You can almost feel yourself slipping into the world of Fantastica with Bastian, leaving the grey boring real World behind...
The amazing thing is that "the Neverending Story" is one of the most far-fetched, bizzare stories I've ever encountered. But somehow, once you begin reading, you are willing to set all your disbeliefs aside.
It could be just Ende's stroke of genius, or perhaps there is still a bit of magic left in our World.
