Kurzbeschreibung

"If Bridget Jones were a scientist, The Neanderthal’s Aunt would be her diary...possibly the best indie novel I’ve ever read." Amy Rogers, Author of Petroplague, ScienceThrillers.com

Sara Nicoletta, a level-headed biologist, is about to become the aunt of a Neanderthal baby.

Or so her sister Liz says. A company named Barlas Labs claims that it can recreate the long-extinct species from its DNA sequence. Liz, a yoga-loving socialite, has signed up to be their first customer.

Sara believes that this is too ridiculous to be possible. But soon the project is encompassing her whole life, compromising her privacy and threatening her reputation as a serious researcher. And she finds herself coming head to head with Theo Barlas himself, the enigmatic founder of Barlas labs.

Written by a scientist, THE NEANDERTHAL'S AUNT combines cutting edge biology with an incorrigible dog, intermittent veganism, and a little light bondage to ultimately tell the story of two sisters who become fundamentally divided on the question of what it means to be human.

OK I'm a little obsessed with Neanderthals after reading all the latest articles about how much most of us are actually partially Neanderthal so I'll admit this is the type of thing that's right up my alley. But the originality and the fact that this was fiction, created by someone who clearly knows the science, made this the best 2.99 I've spent in ages. It was funny and snarky and unexpectedly moving. LOVED IT!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Funny, Moving, and Thought-Provoking! 7. Januar 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This book was a funny, moving, and thought-provoking cross between modern romance, science, and humor.

The story has great characters: a female scientist who's smarter in science than in romance; her sister, an over-the-top, urban mom-to-be; a handsome, mysterious man who might or might not be the real deal; and a whole host of family and friends who really round out the story. The characters are complicated and likable, even when they're doing questionable things. By the end I was totally caught up in the drama of the story and wanted to find out what would happen to these characters in the future.

There are also a lot of hysterical scenes in the book. Without giving away any spoilers, some of my favorites had to do with failed attempts in the bedroom, a baby shower with mommy blogger types, and a jealous primate.

Although the whole resurrecting-the-Neanderthal plot seemed crazy at first, I really got into it and it became more plausible as it went on. The story is exciting and the writing flows well and is easy to read. And as a reader who knows almost nothing about science, the author included just enough of it to make it interesting without being dry. And I appreciated the insider's view of the life and work of a scientist.

Well worth $2.99! Quite a bargain for such a fun and interesting book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This is movie material 11. Januar 2014

Wow, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Initially, I skimmed the book; however, as each chapter went by, the events and descriptions got more interesting that I went back and read the entire book word-by-word. Great content and wonderful narration made reading an enjoyable experience.

For anything that comes close to storyline, then it has to be the 1993 movie Jurassic Park, where a genetic experiment of cloning extinct animals goes wrong in a heavily automated tropical island. Well, that’s as far as any resemblance goes. The plot of Neanderthal’s aunt is entirely different, and so is the ending. The portrayal of certain characters, like Liz, Angus Gupta, Hank, not to mention Sara herself, are outstanding. Likewise, some events are memorable, such as the chimp getting exposed to Panola virus during a freak bird storm.

Solid writing, with a great sense of humour. Overall, I found the book extremely entertaining and edifying. The content is movie material, although it can go without the mega budget of Jurassic Park.

Lovely surprise read. Great story, a slight tangent to my normal reading of romance but very worth a look. The author told a humorous, engaging tale. So totally satisfied the geek part of my personality. With having more than a just passing knowledge in the scientific parts of her tale i found she seamless entwined accurate information while entertaining. Well done!

I really enjoyed the creativity of this work. I am a nurse and my oldest son is and anthro/archaeology doctoral candidate so the topic was very intriguing. There were quite a few editing errors, but they did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
