Synopsis

This novel includes illustrations by S.L. Fildes and Hablot K. Browne (Phiz). Dickens' final novel, left unfinished at his death in 1870, is a mystery story much influenced by the 'Sensation Novel' as written by his friend Wilkie Collins. The action takes place in an ancient cathedral city and in some of the darkest places in Victorian London. Drugs, disappearances, sexual obsession, disguise and a possible murder are among the themes and motifs. A sombre and menacing atmosphere, a fascinating range of characters and Dickens' usual command of language combine to make this an exciting and tantalising story. Also included in this volume are a number of unjustly neglected stories and sketches, with subjects as different as murder, guilt and childhood romance.

I say this not because the novel is bad -- it's actually quite good -- but because it was left unfinished; Dickens died while writing this novel. I was prepared to be frustrated that I would never know how the mystery was solved, but the novel ends before you really get to know what the mystery is! Edwin Drood disappears and is presumed dead, and Dickens makes it look as if a certain person is guilty of his murder. Of course, Dickens would never have been so obvious, so it has to be a red herring. In addition to the murder, a person who is obviously in disguise just barely appears on the scene before the story abruptly ends, leaving no clue as to who this person may be. The novel is well-written and intriguing, but without an ending, it's a little frustrating!

Dickens' Dying Words 2. April 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
If Dickens had managed to finish this, it may have been yet another masterpiece. It is full of convincing characters, dark images, dark humour, and memorable passages. Through Jasper, we are able to see a side of Dickens himself. In one of Dickens' Christmas Books that takes place at an Inn, a character (who I suspect is a representation of Dickens) himself is jealous of a character named Edwin. Interestingly this repeats here. It is also interesting that after Dickens and his wife seperated, he fell in love with a younger woman. Jasper is attracted to a younger woman. It is also striking that in his dying written words, there are many images of graveyards. Even though Dickens died before he could finish this, it is an interesting work. There are many elements that make this book worth looking at. (Interesting dialogues, convincing characters, comical touches, good and dark images, a representation of Dickens himself, etc.) These are also Dickens' final words, and for that reason alone, this book deserves a special place in the museum of literature.

Interesting, this one 23. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
This was a slightly unusual novel for Dickens, a bit more dark, serious, and short like "Great Expectations" had been, with the previously unused topics of drug use, orientalism, and the church making appearances. It is of course his last and unfinished novel, though as the introduction and notes of the excellent Penguin edition make clear, there is little doubt about how it might have proceeded, and it's not so much a "mystery" novel as we have come to understand the term. For heaven's sake, don't get some edition that has been "finished" by someone else. What we have here is the dark work of a mature stylist, who still has the gifts of comedy and character. The obsessive nature of Jasper's love mirrors the character of Bradley Headstone in "Our Mutual Friend."
