The Mummifier's Daughter Series BOXED SET (Complete Full-Length Novels 1 -3)

Now available in a single volume, the Mummifier's Daughter Series, books 1-3 will sweep you away on an adventure in one of history’s most intriguing civilizations.

This bundle includes the following novels:

1233 BC, Ancient Egypt. This is Young Neti-Kerty‘s dream: To follow in her father’s footsteps and become the first female mummifier in Thebes. Shabaka, the secretive Prefect, the Pharaoh’s special envoy charged with combating crime in the capital of the Pharaoh’s empire, also often makes use of Neti Kerty’s special talents. With her powers of deduction and knowledge of the dead, she has already helped solve many crimes.

But then the unimaginable happens. Her parents are cruelly murdered, and Neti-Kerty’s small, idyllic world shatters. Together with Shabaka the Prefect, she embarks on the search for her parents‘ murderer. Surviving many shared adventures, they stumble upon a monstrous conspiracy...

Neti-Kerty’s reputation as Egypt’s first female mummifier has apparently reached all the way to the Pharaoh. Neti-Kerty and Shabaka, Special Investigator and Prefect of Thebes, are astonished to be summoned to the palace of Ramses II to investigate the sudden death of the Vizier Khay. Thanks to her powers of deduction and knowledge of the dead, Neti soon determines that something is amiss.

As more people disappear during the investigation, the situation increasingly gets out of hands and before long Neti and Shabaka find themselves peering into the deepest recesses of the human soul....

Incomplete sections of the book of dead found in Ramesses’ tomb and the murder of a prominent tomb scribe sparks fears of the curse of Anubis
in Deir el-Medina. While the lack of witnesses and a close-knit worker community hampers, Neti-Kerty and Shabaka’s investigation at a time
when the whole of Thebes awaits the arrival of the pharaoh for the beautiful festival of the valley.

When Neti starts to experience strange sensations and the pharaoh’s life is endangered it becomes evident that there is a larger, more sinister
scheme to the events....

The Mummifier's Daughter Series returns us to a land steeped in mystery and magic. It paints a detailed picture of Ancient Egypt in all its glory. Faithfully recreating one of the most remarkable eras in Egypt’s history, author Nathaniel Burns weaves shudderingly ominous tales of ancient Egypt’s mysteries revealed through a cast of characters the modern reader will recognize even though millenia have passed.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Mummifier's Daughter: interesting potential, but author couldn't pull it off 17. Juli 2014
Von K. G. Evans - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
First, the good: The author has created two interesting characters and an interesting scenario. The plot was engaging enough to make these books an easy read.

On the bad side: It appears the author's knowledge of ancient Egypt came from reading 3 or 4 Wikipedia articles. I propose that someone should not try to write historical fiction about a place and time that he/she knows nothing about.

Although the characters had great potential, they fell apart after the first book. The role of the male protagonist was reduced to being constantly beaten up, "stiffening" on every other page, and being perpetually stupid to allow the female protagonist to explain everything to him - and therefore the reader. The female becomes too superhero-like. She goes to court and begins to order around the pharaoh. It turns out the pharaoh is pretty stupid, too.

At times the book was almost laugh out loud funny because of the author's misuse of words. The author used words when he did not understand the meaning of the words and, therefore, used them incorrectly. The people wove flowers into "reefs" instead of "wreaths." People wrote with a "quail" pen instead of a "quill." (The Egyptians did not write with quill pens. They used a reed with split ends to create a brush.)

People's eyes were constantly "distending" and their brows "marring" instead of widening and furrowing. But my absolute favorite is when the author used "disease" instead of "unease" as in "Calmly he replied, hoping his dis-ease did not sound in his voice."

The author's attempt to create romantic tension between the two main characters did work pretty well until the male character became so one-dimensional that you couldn't see why anybody might want him.

I gave the book set 2 stars because it was readable, but the author badly needed an editor to help make the characters and plot more believable and also to help with the author's challenges with English vocabulary and usage.
2.0 von 5 Sternen historical novel stretched beyond sustainability 4. August 2014

The author has scant knowledge of ancient Egypt and has an unfortunate habit of referring to things like geese repeatedly as "Egyptian Geese" or "Egyptian Stones". Yeah, we get it! The story is set in Egypt. That flaw is the least of my problems with this book. The character development is as 2 dimensional as an "Egyptian Tomb Painting" and the author is shameless in stretching this to 3 books. Lastly, the third novel ends in the middle of a climax with no completion and a promised continuation which did not materialize. I feel a little guilty about that last complaint though, it's like the old joke, "The food was terrible! And there was so little of it." I won't be waiting for the next installment.

I have to to give it to the author - the three books make for a great story. The characters are wonderfully nuanced and the plot pacing is done so well it kept me up reading late into the night. I do want a fourth book and soon! but minor quibble there were some statements the characters made that seemed anachronistic and jarred me out of the story. for example ,when Nety says after her mother died, "Mom, you cant do this to me" i suddenly felt as if i was jerked out of a historical to a YA setting. Also when someone says, "Man, that stinks!" I'm not objecting to the sentiments, just that i highly doubt that characters from Ancient Egypt would break out into sentences that seem to be typically modern American

Although the books were a good read; the series doesn't end and no other books are planned. Other than that, it was fun
