Pressestimmen

This volume focuses on the history of the ABC network's made-for-TV 'Movie of the Week,' which ran for six seasons, from 1969 to 1975. The prologue gives an overview of this aspect of television history, and the growth and then demise of this type of production is documented in the chapters (each covering a season). Appendixes include both an alphabetical and a chronological list of the movies. A concise bibliography and an index complete the volume. This title would be helpful and support studies that focus on film and television, and public libraries might consider this an interesting selection for the circulating shelves. Booklist Michael McKenna's book breaks important scholarly ground by treating the series in both breadth and depth. The first half offers an interpretive history of the series in roughly 180 pages: a chapter per season, and a page or two of text apiece for the films that McKenna judges to be the most significant of that season. The second half uses another 180 pages to provide a chronological listing and alphabetical filmography of all 243 films aired in the series. The two pieces of the book reinforce one another: the second providing an authoritative guide to the series and the first making a case for its social and aesthetic significance...The ABC Movie of the Week: Big Movies for the Small Screen recovers films both individually and collectively. McKenna notes, in a brief epilogue, that he wrote it in an attempt to save the films from historical oblivion. He has, unequivocally, succeeded. The Journal of American Culture

Revisiting ABC's Movie of the Week! 20. November 2013
Von Michael OConnor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Bring up ABC's MOVIE OF THE WEEK and aging baby-boomers might respond: 'Didn't they do BRIAN'S SONG and a couple other flicks?' In point of fact, MOTW was much more. When it premiered in September 1969, it sparked a creative transformation in television, causing all three networks to jump on board. MOTW lasted six seasons, producing many fine - and a few not so fine - movies. The history of this TV phenomenon is ably documented in Michael McKenna's comprehensive THE ABC MOVIE OF THE WEEK, BIG MOVIES FOR THE SMALL SCREEN, a 2013 Scarecrow Press release.

As documented in MeKenna's book, ABC's MOTW didn't create the 'made-for-TV movie' concept but it furnished the spark that ignited a new programming format that became a television staple for some years. After relating the history of the movies made for TV concept, McKenna provides a season-by-season critical yet affectionate breakdown of the 240 films MOTW featured in its six seasons. The films were a mixture of high-quality, high-concept, 'relevant' films and more broad-based flicks, witness: TRIBES, THE OVER-THE-HILL-GANG, HOUSE THAT WOULDN'T DIE, DUEL, BALLAD OF ANDY CROCKER, THAT CERTAIN SUMMER. GO ASK ALICE and the aforementioned BRIAN'S SONG, probably the crown jewel of MOTW. Also featured were pilots for possible series -THE NIGHT STALKER, THE ROOKIES, KUNG FU, etc. The programming was so popular that ABC added a MOVIE OF THE WEEKEND to compliment their Tuesday powerhouse. By Season Five though, sagging ratings, the advent of a new TV 'long-form specials' philosophy, a lack of quality scripts, etc.spelled the end of the road. In 1975 ABC pulled the plug on MOTW. In its lifespan, it had produced many fine movies, won a number of Emmys and posted high ratings for several seasons running.

I'm aware of one other book on MOTW but, by comparison, McKenna's book is the best on the block for my money. THE ABC MOVIE OF THE WEEK is an appealing, perceptive and well-researched guide to memorable television programming of the past. Recommended.

The ABC Movie of the Week: A Television Landmark 29. November 2013

11/29/2013 11:41am The ABC Movie of the Week Michael McKenna
This book is a very comprehensive examination of a multi-million dollar programming
gamble by ABC-TV in 1969. I for one, was fascinated with the idea of a new movie
every week for an entire season: 25 movies!
Michael McKenna's book has an historical overview of the 'Made-for-TV-Movies'
before the ABC Movie of the Week debuted on 9/23/69 to the final MOW on 5/14/1975.
McKenna has listed all the (240) MOW'S for all six seasons.
In Chronological order: MOW film Title (air-date) Day, Date.
Alphabetical Filmography on all of the films including: Production information;
The Studio, producers, directors, writers.
The air-date, source material of the teleplay, cast/character list, plot summary,
DVD availability, some are, most are not.
Whether the MOW was pilot for a TV-series.
I don't agree with the opinion that a MOW is a failure if it didn't go to a series.
McKenna has extensive sources, footnotes, critics comments on the MOW, brief
footnotes on movie reviews, some footnotes are longer for certain titles.
An Index of all the referenced material.
Awards: Emmy Award nominations/Award winners.
Season by Season: McKenna examines some well-known MOW'S for a thorough exam/review,
year by year as the MOW'S became more successful, the author examines certain titles
in depth and the impact the MOW had on television programming for years to come.
The MOW was the infant that started the networks making Mini-Series,
Long form movies until Cable-TV took over.
I would have liked McKenna to have included the TV Rating/Viewers,
Audience Share and Rankings.

Full of information and brought back many memories of when I was little and some of these movies would play at 3pm on WLS in Chicago everyday after school.
This would be a great gift to any tv buff. I really enjoyed it.

The book sounds more than I interesting, but at $46 for Kindle? Not unless the videos are actually included. Not for that price.
