While I'm of the opinion that Hoagland's research has "gone off the deep end" in recent years (at least for the most part), "Monuments" remains one of the very best books about the possibility of artifacts on Mars, and I don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who wants a sensible overview of this bizarre subject matter. I find the author's speculations fascinating; even without them, though, the Martian enigmas present their own formidable challenge. One doesn't have to agree with Hoagland's every conjuecture to recognize that his is a voice worth hearing.

This book I could not put down. There were parts that were overly technical. For me this was a great bonus. However I think there should be a shorter version that simply states the facts, but leaves the detail. It is well written, well documented, and has a great air of mystery about it.

The probable reason that the government will not admit to what it knows is that they would be mostly helpless to explain to Congress who THEY are and what their intentions are. Since they have the responsibility to provide for the common defense, they wound likely cause more panic and disruption in society if they told the truth, something they rarely do anyway. Many religious people are in agreement with John Lear who told Art Bell in September 1989, "Art, if there is a GOD in heaven then the [grays] are of the devil."
