Charlie Doane, former senior editor of SAIL, is currently that magazine's editor at large. He has also worked on staff at Cruising World, and Offshore magazines, and written dozens of freelance articles for Blue Water Sailing, Ocean Navigator, Boatworks, and Yachting Monthly. The author of dozens of technical features and boat tests, he has served as a judge in SAIL's Top Ten competition. He lived aboard a cruising boat for two years, has sailed 30,000 offshore miles (including five transatlantic crossings) and innumerable coastal miles, and possesses a wide range of experience that includes skippering deliveries and captained charters, bareboats, and crewing. He has edited manuscripts for International Marine and was the revising author for a successful cruising book for Sheridan House

I wish this had been the first book I bought when I started researching live aboard cruisers. This book is a great overview that will help you codify what type of boat you want and need. There is very little in the book that I haven't read in other places, but I haven't found any other book that puts all of the information in one nice reference like this. The recommended reading list is worth the price of the book!

I only wish that his boat reviews in the back had included more boats in the live aboard size range rather than concentrating on so many smaller boats.

That being said, you won't go wrong buying this book.

great book. highly recommend. well-written. concise. and with one exception, comprehensive.

most would consider proas too eccentric (or cutting edge depending on your viewpoint) to cruise in. but there are plenty out there, enough that they should have at least been mentioned as an option. hopefully in the 2nd edition he will discuss the designs of rob denney, joseph oster, russell brown, dick newick, and even bernard smith.

for those who don't know, a proa has two hulls like a catamaran, but unlike a catamaran the symmetry is fore-aft, not left-right. the mast is not on the forward crossbeam, but rather in one of the hulls. this hull is usually longer than the other, and both are usually double-ended (four bows, no sterns). one reverses direction (shunts) instead of tacking or gybing. the design goes back thousands of years to the south pacific.

there is much to be said for their performance and ease-of-handling. see [...] and/or [...] for more details.
