A good read after Hunger Games and Divergent
am 21. August 2014
A good read, but without wanting to spoil the story for those who don't know it yet, there are passages which are a bit hard to explain from a logical perspective. As if a character closed a door on one scene and then re-opened it shortly afterwards and the room outside has completely changed. Makes you wonder how much of it is (in the characters' minds) real and how much is hallucination.
Layers within layers within layers
The story is certainly not black & white, evenly divided between good and evil. Allies suddenly turn out to be enemies, and then friends again, and then... Oh dear - I kept feeling I was losing track of who is on whose side... And sometimes characters' motivation for changing their behaviour is a little hard to follow.
But having got the negative bit out of the way, the collection is definitely a good read and very original. It's not boring old "run of the mill" reading at all. There are some pretty gruesome sections, so it's not for young readers: The story is too complex with too many twists and turns. But I have to say I enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Hunger Games and the Divergent trilogy.
