Best book I've seen on this topic 8. November 2008

As the holidays approach I liked the idea of making gifts in Mason jars, especially soups or stews. The end of the year is such a hectic time and often there is cold weather; what better to have on the shelf than a homemade, delicious and fast soup mix?

There are a number of books on the market with this idea and I have several others of these books. The Mason Jar Soup-To-Nuts Cookbook is by far my favorite.

Three pages devoted to each recipe, one for the labeling and each page can be easily copied to pass along. (One such booklet that I own is printed in red so that nothing can be copied. What a pain to have to write out the directions over and over--ugh!).

The recipes are tasty, hearty and delicious. Even my husband has been very impressed with the quality of the soup recipes. Three that we have made: Homemade Chicken Noodle, Very Veggie Pasta Soup, and a great Tortellini Soup that is really a whole meal.

Be prepared to have to buy spices and bouillon. It is very well worth it however and you will not believe the wonderful gourmet flavor achieved. Thyme is in just about every recipe, so if you can only afford one spice, that's the one.

I have made over 18 jars of the soups from this book, some for gifts but most for my own pantry. I love how prepared I feel for emergencies, last minute gifts or surprise dinner guests. I made four jars for a new mother and she was thrilled, saying it was her favorite present!

Hats off to the authors, you've saved me money, time and anxiety. Well done!

Ingredients missing from recipe. 21. Januar 2013

I was so excited to try these recipes and was so disappointed. The first one I tried to put in a jar was Lemon Poppy Seed Cake. Ingredients would not fit in the 1 quart wide-mouth canning jar. Cut back flour and decided to try the recipe anyway. Recipe states cream the butter, butter was not put in the ingredients to add to the recipe. So no idea how much butter to cream. Contacted the author of the book and no response.

Tried another recipe Barley Rice Stew again ingredients did not fit in 1-pint wide-mouth canning jar

I'm done with this book and would not recommend it to anyone.

Never gift without testing first!!! 11. November 2012

I have prepared many of the recipes in this book, however I have always needed to "tweek" them for our tastes. The Barley Rice Stew is so salty as to be inedible if you don't modify the recipe. Barley takes nearly 2x as long to cook up as rice, so the rice winds up mushy by the time the barley is edible. Just this morning I prepared the Avery's Apple Oatmeal, and find I need to cut both cinnamon and salt in half. One reviewer thought these would be more appropriate for quick fix dinners -- like those evenings when one kid has Taekwondo and the other has soccer (and the baby is just stuck in the mom taxi forever). For this purpose I prefer Dinner Is In The Jar: Quick and Easy Dinner Mixes in Mason Jars or Mylar Bags (bw), also available on Amazon, but then again, what ISN'T available on Amazon. I routinely use recipies from THAT book for quick dinners as well as for the family's emergency supplies. Considering that this is being written scant weeks after Hurricane Sandy, emergency preparedness is in the forefront of my brain.

This book has been a dissapointment, but still worth buying. If you have the creativity and culinary expertise to modify the recipies you'll do fine, but TEST THEM FIRST.

While the recipies in this book will look cute and be a thoughtful gift, save yourself a lot of embarassment by testing them completely in your own kitchen, with your own family before giving them as gifts. If you are choosing between THIS book and the Dinner Is In The Jar book, it's a toss up -- you'd have to decide what your purpose is. If it's gift giving, try this one. If you want to eat it yourself and use it as quickly preparable meals, or emergency supplies, pick Dinner Is In The Jar.

Very pleased! 27. September 2010

I picked this up for the soup recipes, but ended up most excited over the drink recipes! I was also pleasantly surprised to see that her baked goods chapters were not repeats of her other Mason Jar book, as is so often the case in other authors' works. I'm very happy to have found this!

Easy to Use 16. August 2005
Von D. Charles - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This Mason jar recipe book is easy to use. The 'recipe tags' that are to be attached to your Mason jar are printed in this book so that you may conveniently just copy them, cut it out and attach it to your jar. No retyping or writing it out. Also, the little subtitles that Ms. Parks uses under her recipe titles make the recipes more personal.
