Carson asks 30 of the biggest names in football management - including Jose Mourinho, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger - what it takes to succeed at the highest level. More than a "how-to guide", its depth of shared knowledge is huge. **** Four Four Two Being manager of a football club has a lot in common with running a business in many other walks of life, and that is the starting point for this well constructed assessment of the post and how to succeed in it ... It contains a lot of thought-provoking ideas Scotsman Talking to 30 top football managers about their careers was always going to unearth a trove of interesting material, and in that respect this book does not disappoint. By far its strongest point is those managers' first-person recollections and observations Independent A book that aims to dig deeper, including "behind-the-scenes" interviews with more than 30 managers, must be welcomed ... Carson does well to avoid the kinds of clich s that blight so many other books on football Financial Times Mike Carson takes a different approach in his compelling examination of 30 managers, treating his subjects as savvy businessmen as much as sports gurus ... It's impossible to interview such people and not come away with some peerless insights Observer

From the post room to the board room, everyone thinks they can be the manager. But how do you manage outrageous talent? What do you do to inspire loyalty from your players? How do you turn around a team in crisis? What's the best way to build long-term success? How can you lead calmly under pressure? The issues are the same whether you're managing a Premier League football team or a FTSE 100 company.

Here, for the first time, some 30 of the biggest names in football management reveal just what it takes. With their every decision, remark, skill, and success or failure under constant scrutiny from the media and the fans, these managers need to be the most adroit of leaders. In The Manager they explain their methods, give examples of lessons they've learned along the way, and describe the decisions they make and the leadership they provide.

Each chapter tackles a key leadership issue for managers in any walk of life and, in their own words, shows how the experts deal with the challenges they face in an abnormally high-pressure environment. Offering valuable lessons for business leaders and fascinating behind-the-scenes insights for football fans, The Manager is an honest, accessible and unprecedented look at the day-to-day work of these high-profile characters and the world of top-level football management.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Overly generalized and superficial with anecdotes of well-known managers 18. November 2013

Very bad book. As a huge soccer, Arsenal, and management fan, I had high hopes for "The Manager: Inside the Minds of Football's Leaders." I was looking forward to reading about inside stories and how well-known managers dealt with famous incidents behind the scenes. I was curious to read about the dilemmas these managers faced each day that the public may not have been aware of. I wanted anecdotes that portrayed the character of each unique and wildly successful manager.

Instead, what I got was a very general book on management that seemed to have been later sugar-coated with the face of soccer managers. The book would talk about general management principles, such as how to communicate amongst your organization, and then staple on a few soccer managers. The overall vibe could be summarized as: 'Great managers should do this. Mourinho does it. So does Allardyce. And a few other popular names.'

It would have been much better if each chapter had focused on a single manager and their identifying attribute (Mourinho for winning mentality, Ferguson for authority, Wenger for talent recruitment, etc).

All in all, the book may be a decent read if you are just looking for some general guidelines on how to become a better leader. However, if you are interested in looking "inside the minds of football's leaders," this is not the book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great way of exploring Leadership Qualities 3. November 2013

A fascinating and novel way of relating the many qualities required to be a great leader. The original manner of comparing football management and business leadership.

I could relate to many aspects of the book and could see both good and bad traits in the manner I conduct myself.

Overall an intriguing read exposing top football mangers philosophy on leadership.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Soccer Title 27. November 2013

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Books about football managers are a dime a dozen these days. It seems like everyone has become an author or the subject of a book. Whether you coached 20 games or 20 years, there is probably a book out there.

Mike Carson's The Manager: Inside the Minds of Football's Leaders is different and better than all the others for several reasons.

First, you hear from dozens of elite managers from the EPL. You will learn from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, Harry Redknapp, José Mourinho, and Brendan Rodgers. Most books give you just one, but here you get many different and unique perspectives.

Second, the book has the blessing of several major organizations. Officials from Deloitte, the League Managers Association, and Barclays all offer their thoughts in the opening pages of the book. We call that instant credibility.

Third, Carson is not your traditional footballing author. He is indeed one of us as a devout Man City fan, but he is also known worldwide as a leadership expert. His company is known for transforming organizations and people. A great choice for authoring this title, Carson does everything right with this text.

The best part of the book is what you take away from it. Every coach, every chapter, every part gives you something that you will remember for a long time. It doesn't matter if you are a player, coach, or just a fan. There is indeed something for everyone. This is a great read for everyone.
