Monty Roberts is, as they say, the real horse whisperer--even if he does revile the last third of Nicholas Evans's romance. Yet Roberts also makes clear from the start that listening and close attention have more to do with gentling an animal than soi-disant whispering. As far as he's concerned, silent communication can "effectively cross over the boundary between human (the ultimate fight animal) and horse (the flight animal). Using their language, their system of communication, I could create a strong bond of trust. I would achieve cross-species communication." And achieve it he does. After one short session, he has even the wildest stallion nickering with ungulate abandon.

Roberts's descriptions of "joining up," as he calls it with horses--as well as with the deer who cavort on his California farm like so many hyperintelligent Bambis--are inspirational in the best sense of the word. Surprisingly, though, it took him long years to persuade most of the humans in his life that pain and punishment are not the way to go. Indeed, the author expends many a page on past mistakes and disasters, familial and professional. Yet The Man Who Listens to Horses remains a powerfully positive document--and not just for Mr. Ed. Best of all, when it comes to his life's work, Roberts is far more practical than mystical. Instead of portraying himself as Equus's messiah, he'd rather share his hard-won knowledge. Having overcome years of rejection and ridicule, the author is certainly not short in the self-esteem department, as some passages in this book demonstrate. No matter. He always checks his ego before entering the corral. --Kerry Fried -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Kirkus Reviews

The surprisingly complex and lively memoir of a successful and influential horse trainer who helped pioneer nonviolent methods of breaking horses in. Some of the book's vigor and pace may have to do with the fact that Lucy Grealy (Autobiography of a Face, 1994) is the coauthor. The narrative begins in 1948 when Roberts, then 13, spent time studying wild horses in the Nevada desert. He applied what he learned there to radically new ideas about how wild horses could be trained and came to be an important figure in horse racing circles. His portrait of the business of breeding and training horses is frank and fascinating, but the book's most memorable passages cover the rodeos and horse business in the west as it was in the author's youth, and include a haunting portrait of his violent, racist father and of some of the other remarkable figures Roberts knew (including a young James Dean). Over and above everything, though, is Roberts's surpassing love for horses, captured here in his evocations of the horses he has trained over a career spanning four decades. This book teaches us not only how to work and deal with horses, but also about people and how we can live together more happily and more peaceful.
A book to recommend!
(If everyone read this, the world would become a better one...)

The mistatements of fact about Monty's life makes this a good book to read, just don't read it as a biography. Well written, just not true. To get more information about good equine communication, try Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt or John Lyons. All available from Amazon!

I saw Monty on local public television, here in the Tampa bayarea a couple of years ago. A year later, Monty did another telethonfor our local public television station, and his first book-now in paperback, was becoming available in the local mass market book stores. I couldn't get my hands on it fast enough. The book is well crafted. It is divided into several chapters, with titles that tell you at what point in the story you are at in Montys life. It will enable you to schedule time to read the book in brief sessions, if you choose. The book not only covers the Horse whisperer Monty, but the other things monty has done in his life that are not as well known. But they all go together to make up the puzzle that is Monty Roberts. I would like to say emphatically that the real horse whisperer has no correlation to the movie by the same name. Monty Roberts has only been married once, is married to the same woman, and is a foster dad to several children as well. This book would appeal to several kinds of people. If your interest is in horses, monty's life will tell you how to be successful with horses. If you want to learn how to be successful at something you love, read montys book, and it will outline the basics of that too. Montys book will also show you that if you have a bonafide talent, with a lot of hard work, you will probably succeed, with the predictable users, injustises, and setbacks. If you would like to find out what it would be like to "live the life you've always wanted, " montys book will show you the glorious side, the hard work side, the sacrifices side, and the what will my real pay check be, side. I haven't read a biography/expose book in several years that I have enjoyed as much as montys. And if you haven't seen the story of his life, get the video(s). I've struggled with my feelings about older people, and becoming an older american. . Montys book-and the corresponding video which I purchased just before I got the book, showed me that you're only as old as you want to be. But you have to pay the price to live that life, and find out early in life how to go about it. The reader will find out what it's like, how it feels-to finally "make it". It will also show you that very often, you have to, "do it afraid." The hardcover version would better suit some readers, as there are several phtos in the middle of the book. They are reproduced on the smaller pages, in the paper back version. I couldn't put the book down, I had to read it every night for almost a week until I read it all the way through. P.S. If you think I'm a monty fan, you're absolutely right! I hope to get a signed copy of the hardcover version of the book eventually.

Interesting!
I expected something else, I guess. At any case I was quite surprised how much the horse gets cheated by a man who does as if he understands these helpless and confident animals. Lesen Sie weiter...

This book does read more like fiction than fact, and the only training in the book is a small chapter in the back. I agree it is just a money making ploy. Lesen Sie weiter...
