Pressestimmen

If you love Tal, you'll love this book. If you love solving puzzles, you'll love this book. If you love chess history, you'll love this book. An instant classic that's suitable for players of all ratings (beginner to grandmaster).
(Jeremy Silman, US Chess online, author of How to Reassess Your Chess)

I am really thrilled by this book, everything is spot-on.

(Martin Rieger Rochade Europa Magazine)

There is much to be enjoyed and years of training material provided. The pen portraits are icing on the cake content-wise and will bring a fresh perspective for many readers who will feel as if they have come to know Tal on a more personal level.
(Michael McGuerty ChessCafe.com)

A combination of biography and tactics manual, and this makes it quite interesting indeed. A very special book, both very instructive and enjoyable for all generations of chess players.
(Peter Doggers ChessVibes)

Exceptional, instructive and entertaining.
(KARL Magazine)

Spectacular chess from history's most creative grandmaster 31. Dezember 2012
Von Christopher J. Falter - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I love to study the chess of Mikhail Tal, because (in his prime) no one--not Fischer, not Kasparov, not Alekhine -- could summon forth the hidden possibilities in the 64 squares. The spellbinding play of "the wizard of Riga" propelled him to the world championship in 1960 at the tender age of 22, a feat unequalled until the advent of Kasparov. Naturally, his games provide an eye-opening perspective on how open lines, outposts, piece coordination, and rapid attack can burst forth from mundane positions. So when I received this latest work on "Misha," I wondered: would it deliver real value from Tal's imagination? Or would it be just a hastily written assemblage of generalizations?

I am happy to report that Karsten Muller and his writing partner, Raymond Stulze, have crafted a wide-ranging and challenging work that will benefit and entertain all but the raw beginner. The core of the book is 100 puzzles based on key positions from Tal's games, divided into 4 sections:
* Warm-up - primarily combinations that lead to a quick win
* Sound sacrifices
* Speculative sacrifices - whose compensation is not necessarily sufficient, but nevertheless set the game on edge
* Defending against Tal's attacks - where a subtle move can refute Tal's attack...but can you find it? I appreciate that Mueller helps us learn defense as well as attack.

Each section concludes with the puzzle solutions. Mueller analyzes the concrete variations that justify the key move, often all the way to the conclusion of the game. So we do not have just 100 puzzles with key moves, but almost 100 illuminating game fragments to boot.

Mueller begins each section with 2 or 3 annotated games that illustrate the theme. The annotations are accurate and helpful, and include plenty of explanatory prose with the variations. Each section ends with an interview with one of Misha's grandmaster colleagues, who share anecdotes about the friendly and spunky Tal along with an annotated game. Most of the annotated games are 1 - 2 pages in length and include a couple of diagrams. The book includes 18 annotated games and about a dozen more game fragments not associated with a puzzle, which would comprise a pretty decent game collection in itself.

I had seen a few of puzzle positions previously, but the vast majority were new to me. It is clear that Mueller did a lot of hard work, rather than simply collating the work of others.

I can't promise that you'll gain 100 rating points by reading The Magic Tactics of Mikhail Tal, but you will enjoy some spectacular play and expand your chess horizons. Highly recommended.

The publisher provided a review copy of this book to me in exchange for my honest review. My ratings of the publisher's books have ranged from 3 stars to 5 stars.

Very good book 19. Januar 2013
Von R. Romero - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is one of the very best books ever written on Mikail Tal. The human side as well as the great games and brilliance of his play. The authors are very objective and present chess as it really is in the tournament circuit. Tal's combos were not always perfect but it is refreshing to see the authors pointing that out in some of his combinations and piece sacrifices where a defense was available but Tal's opponent would crack under the terrible pressure Tal would put you under. All in all a superlative work on a very great Chess player. Bravo!

Superb 13. April 2013

Mikhail Tal is my favourite chess player. He played because he loved the game, not to earn titles. His passion and love for the game comes through in his adventures at the board.
This book is one of the few to capture the personality and flavor he brought to the most pedestrian positions by usually engaging in an explosive tactical strategy that completely confounded his opponents. I particularly enjoyed the opinion of other grandmasters.

Hi,
I love this book.
I am very interested about the character of the player.
In this book they have a great balance of exercises and
real personal details from numerous players, that describe their personal encounters with Tal.
This makes it a very special account of Tal's legacy.

I play chess since the 10 years old, and just now in my 44 years old, I found this magnific and beatiful book.
it's a pity have this book now and not in my childhood.

M.Tal was my hero and now with this book is my master too. Really thanks Mr. Muller for write this book for all the chessplayers of the world and for the next generations of players.

I shall save this book in a very special part of my life.
