"It is a very hard thing, in this time of ours, to be mad and middle-aged," hero Francis Petrel writes early on. Perhaps the best feature of veteran crime writer Katzenbach's latest is the way he fleshes out the everyday desperation of someone living on the fringes of society. Petrel receives an invitation to a reunion of former "guests" of the insane asylum his parents consigned him to as a teenager. This not very credible plot starter leads Petrel to investigate what horrors led to the hospital's closing, his thoughts especially revolving around the unsolved murder of a nurse. Intriguing, but far too long and too encumbered with Petrel's Byzantine thoughts to generate suspense. Still, the Edgar-nominated Katzenbach has a following, and this introspective tale will interest those who don't read thrillers for the thrills. Connie Fletcher

It’s been twenty years since Western State Hospital was closed down and the last of its inmates reintegrated into society. Francis Petrel was barely out of his teens when his family committed him to the asylum, after his erratic behavior culminated in a terrifying outburst. Now middle-aged, he leads an aimless, solitary life housed in a cheap apartment, periodically tended to by his sisters, and perpetually medicated to quiet the chorus of voices in his head. But a reunion on the grounds of the shuttered institution stirs something deep in Francis’s troubled mind: dark memories he thought he had laid to rest, about the grisly events that led to Western State Hospital’s demise.
It begins in 1979, when twenty-one-year-old Petrel descends into the state-run purgatory of an overcrowded, understaffed Massachusetts mental hospital. Surrounded by inmates roaming the halls like drugged zombies and raving behind locked doors, well-meaning orderlies, jaded nurses, and patronizing doctors, Francis finds friendship with a motley assortment of fellow patients: a would-be Napoleon, a wise ex-firefighter, and a man obsessed with battling imagined devils. But there’s nothing imaginary about the young nurse found sexually assaulted and brutally murdered late one night after lights-out.
The police suspect an inmate, while patients whisper about visions of a white-shrouded “angel.” But the striking and mysterious prosecuting attorney who arrives to investigate has her own chilling theory—about the grim, telltale “signature” left on the victim’s body, a string of unsolved sex killings, and a very real devil who, by chance or design, has come to turn a madhouse into a slaughterhouse.
Now, with the past creeping back to haunt his thoughts, and nothing but a pencil and the bare walls of his bleak apartment, Francis surrenders to the overwhelming need to tell the story of those nightmarish days. But because the crime was never solved, it’s a story doomed to remain unfinished. Until, like Francis’s long-buried recollections, the killer resurfaces . . . with a vengeance.

It's all about insanity and sanity, the world outside and the world insind a psychiatric ward. Franics Petrell, admitted to that hospital cause of paranoia, hearing voices, been left alone.
Franics didn't seem to be really ill despite that he gears voices but ignores them. Quickly he finds freinds inside the hospital. Peter the fireman, abit older than he is, but as sophisticated as Franics. A murder happens, commited by a serial killer and so Francis and Peter help state prosecuter Lucy Jones finding a probable serial killer inside the building. The way Franics is helping is the most fascinating aspect of the entire story. Franis has got the ability to see things, to analyze crime scenes in an incredible, sophisticated and clever manner. Peter also is experienced in those things. Katzenbach delivers views in the world of insanity, undecided wether the world outside is the sane world or the inside world. I did not hope the end woukd be typical, there is a plan and the plan should work and the killer is captured, but thank John Katzenbach it is not like that and the tension is kept until the end of the novel. There is not even one page where you get bored while reading and that makes that novel to a very intelligent and impressive thriller. You will love Franics, Peter, Big and Little Black and all the other friends who are helping each other finding the killer and protecting the others. It is the best thriller apart from "The Analyst" I have ever read. Full house for John Katzenbach because the style is brilliant, the story is very intelligent adn there is no time to get bored. I am looking forward to reading the next Katzenbach novel.

This is the second and definitely last Katzenbach book I have read. The book starts off well but loses itself in pages and pages and pages of dialog. The story just bogs down and the end is a tremendous anticlimax, that seems to have been thought up on the spur of the moment to get the book finished. At page 187 I skipped over 200 Pages to page 400 without losing ANYTHING of the story. I wish I had skipped over most of the last 150 Pages as well as Katzenbach used 200 Pages to end the book where 15-20 would have done it just as well.
Like the Analyst Katzenbach seems to have a good idea for the beginning of the story but runs out halfway through.
The "murderer" seems to have just been thought up willy nilly, even at the end of the book we know nothing about him, where he came from, why he was there, a ridiculous and disapointing end to a long drawn out and rather boring book.

In allen Buchläden sieht man Katzenbach-Romane, einer dicker als der andere. Fragen sie sich nicht auch manchmal, wann diese Autoren all diese dicken Bücher schreiben und ob die Leute sie wirklich bis zum Schluss lesen?
Jedenfalls... dies ist wieder eins von den dicken Büchern, denen nach zwei Dritteln irgendwie der Saft ausgeht und man den Eindruck hat, der Autor habe bis zu dem Zeitpunk nicht gewusst, wer tatsächlich der Mörder ist.
Die Idee ist gut, auch wenn ich mich noch immer frage, ob 1. ein Verrückter weiß, dass er verrückt ist und 2. ob jemand der Stimmen hört, zu solche "ausgereiften" Gedankengängen fähig ist. Vielleicht hätte es der Geschichte besser getan, wenn sie ein neutraler Erzähler berichtet hätte. Darüber bin ich noch immer im Zwiespalt.
Nach gut 400 Seiten wird man dann jedoch immerhalb von 3 Seiten mit einer Erklärung abgespeist und dann ist es auch schon vorbei. Anfang und Ende passen einfach nicht zusammen und das ist mehr als schade.
Ich hoffe, die andere Katzenbachs sind besser zuende gedacht.

Spannend und empfehlenswert
