It's 1 am and I have to be up at 6 to get ready for work. But here I am, inspired and desperately needing to share with everyone how absolutely fabulous I found this book. Amy Lane has surpassed herself with this story. I am not the type of reviewer who breaks down the story piece by piece. I want to share with you how I felt reading this emotional tale. It brought be to tears, made me laugh, and all the emotions in between. The author did a wonderful job of pacing the story and didnt overwhelm the reader with needless scenes. Up to this point I had a clear favorite in this m/m genre. If you enjoy m/m, dont enjoy reading non-stop nookie scenes and are looking for a story that has a heart and soul - this is it. Let Amy Lane take you on a 15 year journey that will tear you down and lift you up. I highly recommend thin "The Locker Room". Now I am going to go look and see what other books Ms. Lane has written to be sure I've checked them all out.

Xander Karcek and Christian Edwards r two very likable characters. For some reason, writers these days keep coming up with characters who r unpleasant. It's a nice change to see characters whom I can cheer for. This novel is a little "The Dreyfus Affair-esque" from several years earlier, except instead of major league baseball, it's the NBA. I love the sports theme, and bringing it to the professional level was an added treat. The book was well researched, and Amy Lane seems to know much about basketball and the NBA. The tension in the novel kept me wanting to keep reading. The sex was good and kept to a minimal. So many gay male romances today are nothing but sex scene after sex scene--and poorly written sex too!! This book is a cut above.

I haven't read a bad book from Amy Lane - I love her voice, her clean writing, and her angsty stories! Even more than the "Promises" series (which I thoroughly enjoyed!), this book just took my heart, wrung it out, then pieced it back together again. And I still can't stop thinking about Xander and Chris, even a day after finishing the novel! No, I'm not a big sports fan and I hesitated to buy the book for that reason alone, but it really isn't about sports at all - it's a story about love, doing something that you love, and what's really important in life.

MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW:

Xander is a starving, neglected teen when he meets Chris on the basketball court. Both boys are outstanding athletes, although it is Xander who is the true superstar (even though he lives for Chris alone, and seeks none of the limelight himself). Chris' loving family takes Xander into their fold, and the boys fall quickly and deeply in love. True love. The kind we would all give our eyeteeth for! But these are genuinely sweet boys, and they wait to consummate their relationship until they are both headed to college on a basketball scholarship.

The story follows the 2 boys as they mature, become men, and rise to fame in the ranks of the NBA. All along, they are entirely devoted to each other, and completely petrified of anyone finding out that they are "married" to each other in all but name. They play varsity hoops for UNC-Chapel Hill (okay, Amy, as a Duke fan, I'll forgive you this little indiscretion) and manage to get drafted together.

And here's where the angst just had me choking up, time and time again. The coach of their pro team is a real bastard and a bigot. Xander and Chris end up compromising their relationship to try to fit into the "straight" mold, even sleeping with women to placate their coach and "be" what they believe they are expected to be. And it just begins to destroy them, from the inside out. And when the bigot coach catches them together, he adds insult to injury and puts their longterm, loving relationship to the test. And tested it is! I cried along with both men, I rooted for them on and off the court, and I melted to jelly at the end.

I hestitated to buy the book in part because I'm a complete sucker for a HEA, and I was worried from the other reviews that there might not be one. YES. THERE IS! There is one big career question left unresolved at the end, but I didn't care - that wasn't what the end or the HEA was about. It was about love, acceptance and making choices because you know what the important things in life are. In the end, for Xander and Chris, their love was the most important thing.

A beautiful book about love - bittersweet in parts, angsty, too, but oh, SO worth it!
