Auf der Jagd nach dem aufrührerischen ehemaligen Gladiator Ajax gelangen Zenturio Macro und Präfekt Cato nach Ägypten, das sich kurz darauf im Konflikt mit Nubien befindet. Unsere beiden Freunde werden somit der 22. Legion zugeordnet. Diese nicht sonderlich kampferfahrene Legion kann die beiden dringend brauchen, doch sehen ihre Offiziere das wenig überraschend anders.

Im Prinzip kann Scarrow gar nicht viel dafür, dass mich dieses Buch weniger als gefesselt hat. Das Problem ist die Handlung, denn natürlich ist sonnenklar, dass der große Feind Ajax nicht vor dem Ende sterben wird, falls überhaupt. Von daher war es irgendwann leicht ermüdend, den x-ten Kampf zwischen Ajax und unseren Römern mitzuerleben, wenn man einfach weiß, dass es vorerst ohnehin keine Entscheidung geben wird. Aber zusätzlich fand ich es auch schade, dass Scarrow die Besonderheit dieser Geschichte nicht genützt hat, denn die 22. Legion besteht bei ihm offenbar nur aus dem dümmlich-unerfahrenen Legaten und einer Reihe teils inkompetenter und gesichtloser Offiziere. Nebenfiguren sind nicht seine Stärke in dieser Serie, das wissen wir und es ist meist kein Problem, da Macro und Cato überlebensgroß genug sind und es doch immer wieder eine Handvoll andere gibt, die die Geschichte bereichern. Aber die Darstellung der 22. erschien mir einfach etwas lieblos. Ganz besonders bedauert habe ich auch, wie schnell sich Macro offenbar damit abgefunden hat, dass er nun der Untergebene des jungen Mannes ist, den er einst selbst ausgebildet hat. Freundschaft schön und gut, aber ein Hauch mehr Konflikt hätte der Geschichte doch etwas mehr Würze gegeben.

Das Ende verspricht allerdings einen spannenden nächsten Band. Dass ich ihn lesen werde, daran besteht nicht der geringste Zweifel.

Auch dieser Roman von Simon Scarrow liegt ganz auf der Linie der vorherigen Episoden mit Macro und Cato, spannend geschrieben und wie immer mit ein paar "grausamen" Details. Und als Zugabe diesmal eine von vielen Krimis her bekannte Verräter-Story.

The Legion by Simon Scarrow is the tenth book in the Under the Eagle series. This book immediately followed Scarrow's previous book, Gladiator as our two heroes, Cato and Marco chased after their arch enemy, Ajax, the escaped slave leader and his gang. The chase take our heroes into Egypt and down the Nile where they encountered a Nubian invasion there, making life bit more difficult for our heroes. For the first time in this series, the young Cato actually become Marco's superior, leading to some interesting interplay between the two.

Is it me but is Simon Scarrow's books actually getting better as he write on?? I guess experience must count for something. The Legion proves to be a very well written book from where I am sitting. Its light years ahead of the first book, Under the Eagle. I found this book to be very fast pace even although action doesn't colored every page. Book was engrossing enough that I read it in one major sitting and enjoyed it. Characterization proves to be quite good and he doesn't give away the plot line so quickly. It was also quite enjoyable to read the continual evolution of both Cato and Marco characters as their relationship changed in this book. Cato's pains of learning leadership is insightful and level out the book as Marco continued his role as a mentor, teacher, friend and now a faithful subordinate. Obviously our heroes do win in the end and the book point to another grand adventure coming up for our underappreciated heroes.

One of the more interesting aspects of this book is Ajax's Capt Ahab mentality toward Cato and Marco and vis versa. Talk about obsessive behavior patterns. This lead to one small weakness to this book and that is how the author continually keep both sides snapping at each other throughout the book in coincidental contacts.

This is not a stand alone book. It would really help if you read the whole series but if not, you still got to read Gladiator first if you have not. Otherwise, it pointless to read this book. Still, if you are a fan of Scarrow, his Under the Eagle series, buying this book is a total no brainer. Its a must buy and it is one of Scarrow's best works in my opinion.

PS: This book isn't sold in the United States at the time of this review. My book came from Amazon.UK and it took over a month to get here in Alaska! Worth a wait though!!

In this continuation of the tale of Marco and Cato, author Scarrow blends Roman politics and war seamlessly to create a gripping continuation of their battle with the renegade gladiator Ajax who joins up with the Nubians who are invading Roman-ruled Egypt from the south. The interplay between Cato, who now clearly outranks his old higher ranking Roman officer, Marco, is particularly interesting. Any fan of Roman historical fiction should enjoy this book and, indeed, the whole series. As a retired Army officer and the author of several novels on Amazon JAGC-Off HIPAA Hysteria, I can't imagine how one can write a series with this many books and keep them all of this high quality!

THE LEGION is the tenth book in the "Eagle "series about the adventures of Centurions Cato and Macro during the reign of Emperor Claudius. This time, they are hunting for ex-gladiator and all around nasty piece of work Ajax. If you haven't read the previous novel THE GLADIATOR by Simon Scarrow, I suggest you do so in order to find out why Ajax is being hunted by the Romans.

There's trouble brewing in Egypt because of the threat of invasion by ambitious Prince Talmis and his Nubian horde. All that stands between him and Alexandria, the seat of Roman control of the Province of Egypt, is the battle untested Twenty-Second Legion stationed on the Nile River many miles south of Alexandria at Diospolis Magna. There the 22nd is led by an incompetent commander named Aurelius. If you've read any of the Richard Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell, you'd recognize the sort of recklessly dangerous fool Aurelius is as a commander. Like the pompous, condescending officers commanding Sharpe at the time of the Napoleonic War, Aurelius thinks he knows best and refuses to listen to sound tactical advice from underlings. In this case, Acting Prefect Cato and First Spear Centurian Macro, who, between them, have seen more action in their sevens years together than Aurelius has in over twenty years of service in remote, peaceful outposts around the Empire. Suffice it to say, disaster is just around the pyramid.

I thoroughly enjoy this Swords and Sandals series and recommend it highly. I'm not sure if THE LEGION is available for purchase in the US yet, though. I received my copy from Amazon.co.uk. (5 Stars)
