Sleepy Hollow. The name sends chills down my spine. I never really had an interest in the legend until the new movie. Now I love it. I read this book in the early hours of Thanksgiving morning. Loved it! It's short, descriptive, and exciting all at once. Advice for those who do read it: don't do it late at night like me. You won't be able to sleep!

This story by Washington Irving has become a classic American folktale. Set in the Catskill Mountains in Colonial Dutch New York state, the fantasy recounts the adventure of one lazy but likeable good-old-boy named Rip Van Winkle.
To escape his shrewish wife, he and his faithful dog spend a day in the Catskills, where he witness a curious procession of strangely-dressed little men (ghosts of Henrik Hudson's crew, waiting in vain for the return of the Half Moon). Sociable Rip helps them carry, and then empty, one of their kegs of mysterious brew.
When he awakens 20 years later, major changes have occurred: in his appearance, the village and the attitude of the people. How can a loyal King's man fit into a new American nation? What happened to his family? Will Rip be welcomed back or driven away as a traitor--or even worse--a lunatic?
Irving's style is truly literary, with prologned description and minimal dialogue. His vocabulary will test modern readers, but his rich narrative provides wonderful examples of the New York Dutch lifestyle. His floral prose presents excellent characterizations and development of plot, but his conversation is sparse. So whenever you hear thunder in the mountains, just imagine that it is the lost Dutchmen playing at Ninepins up in the clouds with our friend, Rip.

As with many readers my previous exposure to this story was the Disney Cartoon and the ghoulish adaptation by Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci in the Movie "Sleepy Hollow" [Blu-ray] (1999).
With my purchase of the kindle I was catching up on the classics or sample from different writers. I did not realize this was so short of a story and had to get the images out of my head from the films.
I am amazed had what a good descriptive writing of Washington Irving. I had to set the book down occasionally to look up people and words. Now I ordered information on Hudson and Cotton Mather.
I spent a year near the location of the story at West Point. Now I wonder if there was such a place as Sleepy Hollow.
This is another example of the book being better than the movie. And I look forwarded to reading more of Washington Irving. You will be hooked on him also. In any event it is work the read.
I used the Text-to-Speech function of the book. I intend to purchase a copy form my physical library.

Washington's classic tale doesn't live up to its reputation
I began reading this book with high hopes. I expected it to be a great book filled with great suspense sequences and rousing dialogue.

Not That Scary, But abrupt ending

horrifying/The headless horseman
This book is suspenseful, horrifying, and exiting which I really like cause a book isn't fun to read without any thrill horror and exiting. It really gave me the creeps.
