*Starred Review* Patterson's latest picks up where one of his most popular novels, When the Wind Blows (1998), about a group of children who have been genetically engineered to fly, left off. Beautiful Max and handsome Ozymandias lead the group of six children who are fighting to stay with Kit and Frannie, the couple that saved them from the School, where they were being held by the scientists who created them. The court returns the children to their biological parents, but only Max knows how much danger they're in. Max is privy to information about Resurrection, another project that is even more daring and groundbreaking than the one that created the children. Dr. Ethan Kane, the scientist who heads up Resurrection, is determined to keep Max silent and plots to kidnap the children. Though Max won't share the secret with anyone, she and Oz gather up the other children and run to Frannie, but Kane is one step ahead of them and will do anything to stop Max from endangering his project--even if it means killing the children. An unexpected and sweet romance between Max and Oz alleviates the nail-biting suspense somewhat, but as usual, Patterson gets his readers in his grip from page one and doesn't let go until the last page is turned. Das erste Buch "When the wind blows" fand ich nicht übel und so kaufte ich mir "The lake house" mit ziemlicher Erwartung. Leider wurde ich gleich anfangs enttäuscht. Die ersten 30 Seiten vermitteln das Gefühl, als hätte Patterson krampfhaft nach einer spannenden Fortsetzung gesucht und sich mit der Gerichtsverhandung a la Hollywood doch ein wenig übernommen. Danach läuft aber das Buch relativ glatt und läßt sich leicht lesen. Ganz im Stil des ersten Teils. Spannend und packend, manchmal etwas übertrieben (Hollywood), aber das hat mich nicht so gestört. Leider ist das Ende wirklich enttäuschend. Nicht die Story selbst, sondern die Art wie es beschrieben wird. Da wird man durch 40 Kapitel aufs Äußerste gespannt auf ein wirklich packendes Ende und aufeinmal hat es den Anschein, als hätte Patterson von einem Kapitel auf das andere einfach keine Lust mehr gehabt, gut weiterzuschreiben und wollte nur das Buch schnell fertig bekommen. Das Ende ist wirklich lückenhaft, teilweise einfach komplett schwach - wie aus einem sehr schlechten 80er Jahre Thriller. Tut mir leid, das sagen zu müssen, aber Patterson hätte bei es nicht zu so einer Fortsetzung kommen lassen sollen.

The Lake House is the sequel to Patterson's famous novel When The Wind Blows and once more the story turns around the six extraordinary children, who by some gruesome experiments have got wings and can fly. Together with Frannie and Kit (a veterinarian and a FBI-Agent), who rescued the kids from the laboratory, where they were "created" and held captive, they have to face strong and unscrupulous enemies. One of the children knows a secret she is neither supposed to know nor to tell (You talk.You die.), which puts all of them in life-threatening danger. Again they have to deal with a mad and megalomaniac doctor and his horrible experiments on humans. No doubt these components make the book an exiting and compulsive read. However now comes my "But". Sometimes it is just to much! Emptying human bodys from all innards and calling them "canoes", giving the innards of young and healthy men to the old, rich and influential to lengthen their lifetime and finally one of the kids giving birth to human eggs. In my view the author has overdone it occasionally, what reduces the book. The Lake House is still a gripping and thrilling novel, but it is simply not as good as Patterson's other books. Those who have read When The Wind Blows might want to read it in order to know the later fate of the "folk" and to those who haven't I would recommend When The Wind Blows or one of Patterson's other novels rather than the sequel

I beg to differ with the poor reviews. What did you expect, Tolstoy-like depth? This sequel to one of my all time favourite books Where the wind blows simply soars above the rest in the genre. As with all Patterson books this is a fast paced thriller with short chapters which strike you like lightning and make you want to read on until the end.
This story is about the newsheadlines of today and tomorrow: genetic engineering, secret experiment, cross-species, and ever valid medical, moral and ethical questions about whether or not man has the right to play God and what consequences that may or may not have for all of us.
One has to like Frannie, Kit and their flock of children. Max and Oz are impressive,and theirs is a unique story of first love.
As for the baddies they are as totally loathsome and unscrupulous as
you'd expect and then some.
No wonder the story has been snapped up by Hollywood and I can't wait for the movies.
And another sequel to follow up on Max and her flock please...??!!!! Keep them coming Mr Patterson.
