Beagle, author of the esteemed The Last Unicorn (1968), adds this beautiful fantasy to his small body of work. The maiden Lukassa, who tells us that "death is a nowhere lined with lightning," drowns but nonetheless is abducted by an ethereal black woman with golden eyes. Lukassa's inconsolable sweetheart, Tikat, refuses to accept Lukassa's death and braves a long trek to find her; he is beset by savages and nearly starves. Lukassa is both corporeal and incorporeal; down beneath the riverbed where she drowned, down deeper still in a shadowy world Beagle draws so skillfully that Tolkein and C. S. Lewis come to mind, she is being pulled to her death by a powerful demon. Tikat and the women he has been pursuing gather at the inn, where another wizard--a mentor to the women and a force for good--lies near death. A fox--into whose feral, witty, magical mind Beagle takes us--rescues Lukassa, and, much changed, she joins the living and her faithful Tikat. Yes, it is different from "The Last Unicorn", which apparently disappoints some reviewers - but "The Innkeeper's Song" is one most interesting and well-written books I have read for a long time.

When I read The Innkeepers Song I was enchanted. It is a beautifully lyrical piece full of warmth and kindness and reality. You are not sucked into a typical fantasy world where the "hero" must save the universe by reciting a magical incantation and waving a sword about. You are also not subjected to the idiocy of a innocent male hero who is simply confused and doesn't want any of the burden of saving the world. Rosseth has a completely new twist on this boring character and was a joy to read about. Subtlety was exquisite and it portrayed the truth in any world, ours or theirs. This is a true piece of artwork and defines the fantasy genre (or an ideal fantasy genre) to a T.

I love the way inwhich "The Innkeeper's Song" was written. The format follows that of an interviewing type which I thought was excellent! It kept me guessing and wondering. Even now, I still wonder what REALLY happened in the story. It's one of those I like to read again and again. (I don't think there was any part of the story that Beagle thought was unnecessary.)I loved it!

Interesting

One of a kind
