Sobel's 1995 volume attracted a large audience, an unusual feat for a historical science title. Her text describes John Harrison's development of the chronometer, an instrument that measured time exactly while at sea and allowed mariners to calculate longitude for the first time and accurately navigate. This handsome edition is profusely illustrated with numerous annotated photos and paintings of the players and the machinery that led to the chronometer's creation.

This was a breakthrough invention that deserved more details than Ms. Sobel gave, especially in the original hardback version-- don't waste your time with it. I finished it wanting more details on the engineering of those beautiful machines-- a major shortcoming! If you're not interested in how things work it's the read for you. Frustrating!

This book is well worth the time it takes to read it. How many of us know how recent the accurate determination of Lonitude was and how it was solved. For the mariners this is a must book to fill in some areas of knowledge that we sometimes feel has been there forever. Not so.

This is an interesting, well-written popular history of the creation and development of the chronometer, which ultimately solved the longitude problem. The illustrated version of this book provides the pictures, drawings, and diagrams that were sorely needed in the original book by Dava Sobel. By the way, the inventor's name was JOHN Harrison, not William (as stated in the Amazon.com review) and not James (as stated in one of the reader reviews).
