Nicole Krauss's The History of Love is a hauntingly beautiful novel about two characters whose lives are woven together in such complex ways that even after the last page is turned, the reader is left to wonder what really happened. In the hands of a less gifted writer, unraveling this tangled web could easily give way to complete chaos. However, under Krauss's watchful eye, these twists and turns only strengthen the impact of this enchanting book.
The History of Love spans of period of over 60 years and takes readers from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe to present day Brighton Beach. At the center of each main character's psyche is the issue of loneliness, and the need to fill a void left empty by lost love. Leo Gursky is a retired locksmith who immigrates to New York after escaping SS officers in his native Poland, only to spend the last stage of his life terrified that no one will notice when he dies. ("I try to make a point of being seen. Sometimes when I'm out, I'll buy a juice even though I'm not thirsty.") Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer vacillates between wanting to memorialize her dead father and finding a way to lift her mother's veil of depression. At the same time, she's trying to save her brother Bird, who is convinced he may be the Messiah, from becoming a 10-year-old social pariah. As the connection between Leo and Alma is slowly unmasked, the desperation, along with the potential for salvation, of this unique pair is also revealed.
The poetry of her prose, along with an uncanny ability to embody two completely original characters, is what makes Krauss an expert at her craft. If one were to judge from Krauss' characters, the history of love is a story of loss and survival. Budding writer Leo Gursky flees the Nazis unharmed but arrives in New York too late to marry his sweetheart. Brokenhearted, he becomes a locksmith (the source of lovely metaphors) and puts down his pen for 57 years. Just as he starts to write again, teenage Alma loses her father. She copes with her grief by reading up on how to live in the wild but worries about her bookish, increasingly isolated mother and Messiah-obsessed younger brother. Krauss, as so many have before her, including Steve Stern in The Angel of Forgetfulness [BKL F 1 05], constructs an intriguing books-within-a-book narrative. Leo turns out to be secretly connected to a famous writer. Another Holocaust survivor woos his beloved with an unusual manuscript, and Alma turns sleuth in her quest for the real-life inspiration for her namesake, a character in a novel titled The History of Love. Venturing into Paul Auster territory in her graceful inquiry into the interplay between life and literature, Krauss is winsome, funny, and affecting. Donna Seaman

This book came highly recommended by several reviewers as one of the "must reads" this summer,and rightly so.But beware: this book not a light beach read: it is a book for all seasons and a book to be re-read over and over again.
As the fates and lives of lonely,abandoned octagenarian Leo Gursky and fourteen year Alma Singer slowly meet and intertwine the reader is caught up in a "history of loves" lost and found.
Incredibly rich,heatbreaking,compelling and moving this thrilling modern day story is truly an unforgettable read.
A love story for the millennium,this is a guaranteed great read. Don't miss out!

Unfortunately I read 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' shortly before starting this, so my initial thought was "Ho-hum..." Basically the same style: small child on strange journey through a New York populated by a cast of eccentric characters, to discover some old family mystery etc etc.
Of course there are the obligatory pages that contain
SiNgLe
WORDS
for effect and there is a mild feeling of satisfaction when one gets to the end and discovers who is connected to whom and how. However, if you have read one of these books you will either love the other one, or hate it because of the feeling of deja vu.
I thought it was nice but not brilliant, it goes on the short list of books I would not read again (although, to be honest, I have already forgotten some details of the plot.) A pleasant read!

I just loved 'The History of Love'! At first the different perspectives of the protagonists might be confusing but the more you get into the plot and into the 'heads' of Alma, her brother, Leo, and Zvi, the more the pieces seem to fit together to make the whole thing 'round'. The plot is exciting, sad, and at many points quite humorous. If you like stories which are not easy in terms of light literature and if you like to figure things out yourself, here you are!
