Eric Homberger's The Historical Atlas of New York City shows what can be achieved within a very narrow frame of discussion. With just one city to depict, Homberger explores the rich variety of details in the city's 400-year history with vivid drawings and illustrations as well as beautifully rendered maps. The atlas takes on the geologic history of New York, major eras (Indian, Dutch, and British), and the formative 19th century, as well as the consolidation of Greater New York, neighborhood histories of Coney Island and Greenwich Village, and the Big Apple exploits of 1945 through 1996. But there's room for the small stuff, too, such as the political and cultural role of New York's taverns in the late 1700s. --Stephanie Gold -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Booklist

This atlas surveys the history of New York City in more than 50 double-page spreads combining a map with brief text, illustrations, and other graphics. Each spread focuses on a particular theme such as "Stuyvesant's City," "From Iron Age to Skyscraper," "Broadway," and "Latest Arrivals" (the new immigrants). Each of the seven chapters into which the atlas is divided covers a particular historical period and is introduced by a brief illustrated overview of the period. An illustrated chronology follows the atlas proper, providing a conspectus of the city's history. Other supplementary features at the back include a section of short biographies of more than 50 outstanding individuals associated with the city, a bibliography keyed to the chapters, and a page with two lists: "New York in American Literature" (a book list) and a selective listing of museums.

An informative and visually attractive introduction to the history of the city, this atlas is quite selective in its coverage and has limited reference value compared with more comprehensive guides to the city. A spot check of the index turns up no references to Mayor Jimmy Walker and no mention of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Museum of Modern Art, although they do appear on maps. Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle are mentioned on the "Our Team" pages, but not Joe DiMaggio. Among other famous New Yorkers that fail to appear in the index are Caruso, Toscanini, Joe Papp, and Woody Allen. James Baldwin is not on the literature book list, and some classic sources on the city are not cited in the bibliography, such as The Columbia Historical Portrait of New York. Nonetheless, many fascinating aspects of the rich history of the city are explored in the atlas: its geology, Harlem, Central Park, the rise of the great department stores, the subway, and public housing, to mention a few.

Many public and academic libraries may prefer to add this title to their circulating collection rather than to the reference shelves.

Errors, errors, errors 17. Dezember 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This book is virtually useless to a serious student of New York City. While it does have some nice features, such as the "Fortunes of Three New York Baseball Teams, 1903-1957" on p. 155, the are so many errors as to render it worthless. The worst example: p. 102 "City of Stores" map where all the stores on 6th Ave. & 23rd St. are shifted one block north of their correct locations and the labels for 2 of these stores (Stern's & Horner Furniture) are switched and two streets (University Place & 4th Ave) are mislabeled (4th Ave. & Bowery, respectively)! This is a waste of money.

COLORFUL AND FUN TO READ 24. Februar 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Though a few facts are inaccurate here and there, the general look and presentation of this book makes it an absolute pleasure to read through. It's not a page for page heart-stopping, boring narrative of historical facts, but rather a full color 400 year history of the greatest city in the world: New York City! Includes maps, authentic photos, amusing stories and very interesting accounts of the evolution of the region. You will enjoy it.

The Appetizer 18. November 1999
Von Jill Tan
Format:Taschenbuch
This was my "elementary course" in the history of New York City, my favourite city in the world (well, actually, that was Manhattan). But a lovely, extremely readable, well-written and informative book with incredibly detailed and creatively laid-out maps. With this basic knowledge of the history of NYC intact, I'm moving on to my next goal -- Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 by Burrows and Wallace. Don't we all love New York?
