For Mattie Johns, reality TV just got a little too real.

When man-eater Mattie Johns agrees to star on a dating game show to save her ailing recruitment business, she's confident she'll sail through to the end without letting down the perma-guard she has perfected from years of her love 'em and leave 'em dating strategy.

After all, what can go wrong with dating a few losers and hanging out long enough to pick up a juicy £200,000 prize? Plenty, Mattie discovers, when it's revealed that the contestants are four of her very unhappy exes.

Can Mattie confront her past to get the prize money she so desperately needs, or will her exes finally wreak their long-awaited revenge? And what about the ambitious TV producer whose career depends on stopping her from making it to the end?

I found myself blown away by Talli Roland's debut novel ... she has potential to become a huge chick lit star. -- Chick Lit Reviews

An addictive read about money, less-than-happy ex-partners and of course, revenge. --Trashionista

A funny, warm, page-turner from a talented new author; we will be seeing a lot more of Talli Roland. -- Colette Caddle

Mehr über den Autor

Talli Roland has three loves in her life: rom-coms, cupcakes and chocolate.

She lives in London, on a street with two Starbucks and (at last count) three other cafés that constantly tempt her outside her cozy little flat.

She has a secret crush on Sir Alan of The Apprentice and if she was forced to wax anyone's hairy chest, it would have to be Simon Cowell. Clearly she watches too much reality television.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Nicely written, but has its flaws 25. Januar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The story is about a young entrepreneur who tries to rescue her business by going on a dating show that promises 200.000 pounds as price money. What she doesn't know is that all the men she is going to date are her ex boyfriends and the producers obviously try to manipulate the dates as much as possible to keep rates up.
Mattie, the main character, is a strong and independent woman, but she is also quick in leaving people who are closest to her in order not to get hurt. I think the author focuses too much on Mattie's past as an excuse for everything - hurting her friends, boyfriends and basically never giving anyone a chance to explain themselves. Mattie just shuts them out of her life when she thinks people might hurt her. I wish she at least would apologize once in the book for her behavior, but for some reason it's all explained away by having issues with her father.

Another fact that I really didn't like about the book is that the author obviously hasn't done any legal research regarding reality show contracts. The book is set in Great Britain and the contract Mattie signs would never be legal there. While this might be okay regarding "harmless" clauses about money, I'm a little shocked that the author seems to think that you can actually make criminal aussault and murder legal by signing a contract. It just feels like there is some sense of justice lacking and it kind of destroyed the book for me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Clever Premise! 1. Dezember 2010
Von Theresa Milstein - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
The first line hooked me:

"`IF I GET PNEUMONIA, HE'S GOING to pay,' Mattie Johns muttered as she gripped the chains of the dunk- tank swing and looked down into the murky water."

The first scene already had me laughing so I was hooked. The story unfolds seamlessly. When I began the book, it was a busy time for me but I made time to read. I finished it in four days.

At first I found Mattie unlikeable. But even in the beginning, I could detect her vulnerability within her uncompromising exterior. This is a woman who wants to be in control, so it's interesting to see how she grows as her life becomes more and more out of her control.

Every character has depth in this story, which is a feat because there are quite a few important characters. Too many books have a friend who is little more than a sidekick, only existing to provide humor. I liked the best friend and learned much about the main character through her. The ex/love interest isn't too domineering or too wimpy. I found myself rooting for him early on, even when Mattie seemed to have good reasons to stay away.

The premise is clever. Reality TV with all the behind the scenes backstabbing exists in spades. I had a hard time putting the book down, wondering what would happen next. No predictability here.

This book is appealing to read and would make a great film. I could see the movie version clearly - probably because much of the time the reality television show is filming. And if this becomes a movie, I will definitely see it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Love it! A wacky, fun rom-com 1. Dezember 2010
Von India Drummond - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Top 5 reasons anyone would enjoy The Hating Game:

5. It's original. So many rom-com/chick lit books are all the same. I've never seen anything like The Hating Game, and yet it still has the fun, feel-good factor you want from a rom-com.
4. No stereotyped characters, no women that are too stupid to live, no men with throbbing, well, anything. The main character is anything but loveable in the beginning, and yet I connected with her. I really enjoyed the journey she went on in the book. This book is fun, wacky, and sometimes sweet, but it also has depth.
3. A hilarious look behind the scenes of a reality TV show. If you've ever watched a show like Four Weddings or The Bachelor and felt smugly superior, then this book will make you laugh out loud.
2. It's just a hella good read.
1. Every time someone buys a copy of The Hating Game, a TV producer chokes on a sausage. (Okay, that's only going to be funny if you've read the book-So go read it!)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sweet and entertaining 25. November 2010
Von Gabriela L. Carvalho - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Talli Roland's "The Hating Game" is all you could expect from a good romantic comedy: fun, light, sweet and highly entertaining. Her story-telling is great (kudos for the stats on the beginning of each chapter, which are hilarious), her characters are lovable and her wit and quick pace turn this book into a real page-turner. It's a must-read for anyone who loves authors like Sophie Kinsella, Helen Fielding and Marian Keyes.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Witty, exciting and feel good 30. November 2010
Von S. Callejo Paterson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was very original, funny, witty, sarcastic and feel good. I loved the storyline and by the end of it I most definitely wanted to read more of Talli Roland's books.
The heroine, Mattie, was proof of how first impressions are deceitful. Angry with the world at first, I enjoyed her evolution as she gradually lowers the shield and the reader gets to know her, understand her, and unavoidably become attached to her as the story develops.
The story has so many twists and surprises I couldn't stop turning pages and opening my eyes wide as another unexpected event turned up, which meant I was never certain if I'd get the happy ending I expect from a chick-lit and I felt the excitement building as I read on.
The Hating Game left in me a feeling of excitement and happiness which is what I really want when I read a book. My cheeks ached from smiling right from the start.
I'll be looking forward to the author's next book.
