December 29, 2014. The night my 7.5 month old son first slept (almost) through the night. I cannot express how thrilled I am to have read this book and to have been able to finally implement some sort of routine and structure to nighttime that actually resulted in sleep.

Prior to this incredible night, he'd been waking every 3 hours to eat. He would (almost always) immediately go back to sleep, but I was a wreck getting up so often. And he was a big fan of waking at 4am for the day, which just wasn't feasible for us on a long-term basis. We'd been told, "Put him to bed awake but drowsy," "Let him cry it out," "Give him more solids," etc. Nothing worked and/or weren't willing to do what we were told (tried letting him cry it out once and bawled way harder than he did).

This book provides a wonderful compromise and explains *why* the suggestions work. Hearing the reasoning makes it, at least for me, much easier to stick with the suggestions. My son adjusted incredibly quickly. The first night, he only cried for a few minutes then didn't cry any other nights after that. He was still waking up once (just once!!) for a feeding, but after a week, he didn't even wake for that feeding.

I would offer the authors my first-born child in appreciation for this incredible book, but I just got him sleeping through the night, so I'm going to keep him....

What a bunch of malarkey. I'm returning it to Amazon with a scathing review. Basically it goes on and on about how helping your child "unlock their innate ability to sleep well" while retaining a strong attachment is great bla bla bla, then just when you start getting excited literally halfway through the book they reveal the magic.... Controlled crying they call by the innocuous name "the sleep wave" with a check in where you repeat a pre-scripted "comforting" line every 5 min!!!!!!!! No touching, no straying from the script, no staying too long in the room. And their "breastfeeding" suggestions are just as ridiculous as every other sleep training program: "just pump out a bottle before bed and have it handy for dad!" "Make sure that if you insist on still nursing at night even though baby 'doesn't need the calories' that you NEVER let baby fall asleep on the breast. Put them down drowsy, if they cry, go back to the 'sleep wave'". So now you know. This book is a sly attempt to pull in an untapped corner of the "sleep training" market: attachment parents who don't believe in sleep training! So beware the bulls*** "sleep wave" CIO wolf in sheep's clothing!

Heather Turgeon has already been an invaluable resource for moms as a writer for Babble. As a doctor and mom of two young children, I’ve followed her column for years. Heather consistently presents a nurturing, respectful, rational and scientific approach to challenges of parenting.

What a gift to all parents that she has now written a book addressing the topic of sleep…. I just received it (pre-ordered as soon as I heard I could purchase a book by her) and have already read most of it. It is much more approachable than many others (such as the Weissbluth book, which is lengthy and slow-going when you’re already underslept, or Babywise, which often left me wondering what to do when my baby didn’t follow exactly as the book described).

Heather and Julie present a sensible and effective approach to sleep that is quickly absorbed. It helps so much to have the scientific underpinnings detailed in the narrative, and I love that there are separate chapters for different ages; If someone needs a quick reminder or just doesn’t have time to read a book, he/she can jump to an age-specific chapter. Then, once the baby or child is sleeping better, the parent will have more time and energy to go back and read the rest. And I think her sensitive and smart approach to sleep is relevant and key to raising kids in general... "Consistency and Attunement". It's a good reminder (and challenge) for us all!

I just finished the book so we are still working through the process, but I will say that it does seem to be working. My son is sleeping longer stretches for naps and his first night time sleep stretch using their method. I only use the method for the first sleep stretch at this point and then we co-sleep through all other evening feeds. I should also note that the longest (so far) he has cried is 25 min which for us beats the 30min - 1.5hr crying stretch he would do in mine or my husband's arms fighting sleep. I have not noticed any change in his personality - he is still super lovey and cuddly (super mama's boy). My son is 6 months old soon to be 7 months. This is a modified CIO in my opinion. I first tried the no-sleep solution, both say it takes about 2 weeks to get in the sleep flow.

This book changed our lives! Our sweet 6 month old was getting up several times every night and refusing to nap in her crib at home (though she napped well at daycare). We followed the advice in this book and by the second night she was sleeping on her own without any protest. She now naps in her crib and sleeps through the night, waking only once to nurse. We couldn't be happier and love knowing that she is learning important self-soothing skills as well.
