Ende der 80er Jahre war der Begriff Hacker durch sensationsgierige Medienberichte und Filme wie Wargames in den USA gleichbedeutend mit Chaos und totaler Verunsicherung geworden. Die für dieses Problem zuständigen Bundesbehörden entschlossen sich daher 1989 endlich zurückzuschlagen. Der überraschende Ausfall eines Großteils des Telefonnetzes Anfang 1990, der zunächst ebenfalls Hackern zugeschrieben wurde, verlieh dem bereits laufenden Gegenschlag nur noch mehr Nachdruck. In den folgenden Wochen wurde mit aller Macht gegen die Hacker-Szene vorgegangen. Das bei den unzähligen Razzien in über 150 Städten nicht nur gefährliche Hacker getroffen wurden, sondern auch Unschuldige, schien zunächst nicht zu stören. Gegen Hacker, denen man nachsagte, sie könnten Satelliten aus ihrer Umlaufbahn bringen oder einen Nuklearkrieg auslösen, schien einfach jedes Mittel recht. Als aber in der Öffentlichkeit immer deutlicher wurde, wie weit die Ermittlungsbehörden in einigen Fällen übers Ziel hinaus geschossen waren, begann sich unerwartet eine Art Bürgerrechtsbewegung für die neuen Medien zu bilden. Der Hacker-Crackdown von 1989 - 90 sollte die Computerszene und auch die sie umgebende normale Gesellschaft grundlegender verändern, als es je einer erwartet hätte. In seinem Buch bemüht sich Bruce Sterling erfolgreich diese verwirrenden und sich teilweise überschlagenden Ereignisse jener Monate in geordnete Bahnen zu lenken und sie damit auch für Nicht-Insider nachvollziehbar zu machen. These raids became symbolic of the debate between fighting serious computer crime and protecting civil liberties. However, The Hacker Crackdown is about far more than a series of police sting operations. It's a lively tour of three cyberspace subcultures--the hacker underworld, the realm of the cybercops, and the idealistic culture of the cybercivil libertarians.
Sterling begins his story at the birth of cyberspace: the invention of the telephone. We meet the first hackers--teenage boys hired as telephone operators--who used their technical mastery, low threshold for boredom, and love of pranks to wreak havoc across the phone lines. From phone-related hi-jinks, Sterling takes us into the broader world of hacking and introduces many of the culprits--some who are fighting for a cause, some who are in it for kicks, and some who are traditional criminals after a fast buck. Sterling then details the triumphs and frustrations of the people forced to deal with the illicit hackers and tells how they developed their own subculture as cybercops. Sterling raises the ethical and legal issues of online law enforcement by questioning what rights are given to suspects and to those who have private e-mail stored on suspects' computers. Additionally, Sterling shows how the online civil liberties movement rose from seemingly unlikely places, such as the counterculture surrounding the Grateful Dead. The Hacker Crackdown informs you of the issues surrounding computer crime and the people on all sides of those issues.

A fascinating book that, along with 'Cyberpunk', 'Wired' and reprints of William Gibson, was required reading in the early-90's - a time when 'Virtual Reality' was *way cool*. I seem to remember that, shortly after appearing in print, it was published on-line, as a downloadable text file. Reading it nowadays, it's a fascinating, nostalgic portrait of a time long gone, and anybody who used to listen to Bomb the Bass whilst playing 'Xenon 2' on their Amiga A500Plus (after flicking through 'Judge Dredd: The Megazine') will shed a tear at an era of C64s, terminal emulators, communist-bloc computer criminals, and a time when computer crime was so low-profile that the term 'cracker' had not yet been invented.
1990 seems so far away. I'm sorry, I'm starting to cry.

An exciting read - if you are in any way interested in the early development of the electronic side of our world, right the place were you read this now.
Hacking - OK, sounds like a good selling story.
But this is also about traditions of e-commerce: the phone companies. And about democracy: government vs. civil libertarians meeting on the electronic frontier, both exploring.
It is the history of the settling of cyberspace (how I hated this word until I read this book!).
Yes, history. Although it is less than a decade ago, the times of adventurous exploration are "long" ago, and books _have_ to be read about this.
Example: You read this book about people making their first unsecure steps into cyberspace, and then some day you recognize one of its main actors, Jerry Barlow, in the news speaking for the EFF, now an important organization in the world of civil liberties, but just in its early founding days, when mentioned in "The Hacker Crackdown"
Shurely our children will have excerpts from this in their history books at school :)

The book itself is great fun to read. The only thing that bothered me was the rather small print, hence only 4 stars.

kinda alright
well, that book is ok for that price, though it's pretty old you are able to figure out the basis of computer atacking... in the end it becomes more boring but it's good to read!
