While King credits Tolkien for inspiring the "quest and magic" that pervades the series, it was Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly that helped create the epic proportions and "almost absurdly majestic western backdrop" of Roland's world.
To King, The Gunslinger demanded revision because once the series was complete it became obvious that "the beginning was out of sync with the ending." While the revision adds only 35 pages, Dark Tower purists will notice the changes to Allie's fate and Roland's interaction with Cort, Jake, and the Man in Black--all stellar scenes that will reignite the hunger for the rest of the series. Newcomers will appreciate the details and insight into Roland's life. The revised Roland of Gilead (nee Deschain) is embodied with more humanity--he loves, he pities, he regrets. King's (Pet Sematary, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/1/98) fantastical and allegorical "Dark Tower" series commenced in 1982 with the publication of The Gunslinger. Subsequent volumes have appeared about every five years thereafter. The Gunslinger introduces protagonist Roland as he pursues the Man in Black through bleak and tired landscapes in a world that has "moved on." Roland believes that the Man in Black knows and can be made to reveal the secrets of the Dark Tower, which is the ultimate goal of Roland's quest. The Waste Lands sees Roland and his fellow travelers continuing the quest for the Dark Tower. They journey through imaginative landscapes, over astounding obstacles, and meet with and confront a unique and fully drawn cast of characters, both human and nonhuman. Reader Frank Muller gives voice to the characters with a thoroughly engaging precision, accuracy, and great humanity and with an edge that drives the story onward and seems to amplify King's skill as an author. This book sets the stage for one of the greatest series and one of the greatest pieces of work Stephen King has ever done. King creates a fantasy world all his own where there is only one gunslinger left, Roland of Gilead. In this first part we learn of his quest for the Dark Tower and his search for the man in black. The book is wonderfully done and if you've read it you've no doubt read the rest of the series. If you haven't though you really should. Part II is even better and by then you'll be starving for the next book, The Waste Lands. For anyone who thinks King is just a horror writer simply read this book. Enough twists and turns to keep you planted on the sofa and reading for hours.

Das Buch hat mir wirklich sehr gut gefallen. Auch Leute, die eigentlich keine überzeugten Stephen King Fans sind, sollten sich doch vielleicht einmal mit diesem Buch versuchen. Es enthält zwar weniger Horrorelemente, stellt aber in meinen Augen eine sehr interessante "fantastische" Erzählung dar. Dies begründet sich hauptsächlich darin, dass das Buch in einer völlig unbekannten Parallelwelt spielt, die von den Hauptdarstellern nach und nach erforscht wird. Der Leser begleitet die Hauptpersonen auf dieser Reise, was sich für mich als sehr spannend und interessant herausstellte. Man sollte aber, wenn man der Englischen Sprache mächtig ist, unbedingt die Originalfassung lesen, da in der deutschen Fassung doch einiges an Atmossphäre verloren geht. Meiner Meinung nach sollte man sowieso alle Bücher immer in der Sprache lesen, in der sie vom Autor geschrieben wurden, denn bei einer Übersetzung geht immer etwas verloren!

Tja, was soll ich sagen.. eigentlich bin ich jetzt nicht unbedingt DER große Stephen King Fan, auch wenn ich wohl die meisten seiner Bücher gelesen habe. Die "Dark Tower" bzw. "Der dunkle Turm"-Serie hat mich aber vom allerersten Moment an fasziniert und ist eine Geschichte, die man meiner Ansicht nach ohne weiteres in einem Atemzug mit "Der Herr der Ringe" nennen kann.
Auf deutsch war das ganze schon sehr gut zu lesen, auf englisch machts dann gleich nochmal doppelt soviel Spass. Man merkt einfach den Unterschied zwischen Original und Übersetzung.
Aus meiner Sicht eine absolute Pflichtlektüre für jeden, der sich auch nur im entferntesten für Fantasie-Literatur interessiert.
Auf deutsch war das ganze schon sehr gut zu lesen, auf englisch machts dann gleich nochmal doppelt soviel Spass. Man merkt einfach den Unterschied zwischen Original und Übersetzung.
Aus meiner Sicht eine absolute Pflichtlektüre für jeden, der sich auch nur im entferntesten für Fantasie-Literatur interessiert.
