Bob Baker is on a lifelong mission to help musicians, authors and creative entrepreneurs use their talents and know-how to make a living and make a difference in the world! He is a full-time author who has developed a successful niche writing and speaking about music marketing and self-promotion for songwriters, musicians, and bands. He served six terms as president of the St. Louis Publishers Association and is an advocate for the self-publishing movement. Bob is the author of the highly acclaimed "Guerrilla Music Marketing Handbook" (which appeared in the movie "The School of Rock," starring Jack Black). He also created the "Music Marketing 101" course, which ran for five years at Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Berklee College of Music in Boston. CD Baby called him "The Godfather of Independent Music Marketing." According to the Salt Lake Tribune, "Bob Baker is one of the most widely recognized authorities on music marketing. A prolific writer, Baker is regarded as one of the industry's leaders in helping musicians leverage online web and marketing strategies to boost their careers." He has appeared in the media on NPR's "Morning Edition" and in such publications as Electronic Musician, Music Connection, The Guardian, Canadian Musician, VIBE magazine, E! Online, and even The Onion! Bob's other titles include "55 Ways to Promote & Sell Your Book on the Internet," "Guerrilla Music Marketing Online," "Unleash the Artist Within," and more. I've only partially read the book so far, but Bob Baker has opened my eyes to the three secrets of marketing and has really inspired me to do well not only in offering but also in music and photography. Keep up the good work Bob!

If you're new to marketing or self-promtion this is a good place to start. Bob Baker might be a little unorthodox but his conversational style is easy to follow.
In this book, he provides an easy to understand approach to self-promotion and debunks a few urban myths about marketing. One of his key points is to have a marketing strategy so that you don't get bogged down in marketing tactics - know the big picture and don't get lost in the details. He reminds us that you can do it yourself and that you don't need to ask anybody for permission to talk about your work.

He rounds the book out with stories from his own journey.

I am a musician who follows and enjoys his valuable music promotion books. I am now writing my first book about putting on and promoting a show from start to finish. I found that most of the information in this book was geared to inspire and give confidence. It's good wisdom that works for any kind of endeavor. I was hoping for a bit more concrete step by step marketing "to do" list and resources. I would still recommend this for anyone starting out to get an overview of the current landscape, and some encouragement as well.
Self publishing authors need to read this... 23. November 2014

There's some good stuff here. I especially like the stress on "Brand Identity Statements" and his advice to "stop talking so much about yourself and focus on benefits to your fans." I'm not sure if these tips can be considered "Guerrilla" - even though far too many authors continue to ignore best marketing practices, these are still the essential, "normal" author building stuff you need to be doing.
