And so begins the story of a quick-witted mouse as he encounters a host of predators who seem to think he might make a tasty treat. As he ventures deeper into the deep dark wood, stumbling across a hungry fox, a not-so-wise owl, and a slimy snake, spinning ever-extraordinary yarns about the scary, scaly gruffalo, he quickly realises that the hungry beast he has been talking of isn't imaginary after all.
A witty, sly little story that wrings giggles from the belly of the reader, The Gruffalo is both stylish and hilarious, simple in its execution, as it plays skilfully on a child's fears and then shows that even the most threatening of monsters are not always as scary as they seem.

The action of this rhymed and humorous tale centers upon a mouse who ``took a stroll/through the deep dark wood./A fox saw the mouse/and the mouse looked good.'' The mouse escapes being eaten by telling the fox that he is on his way to meet his friend the gruffalo (a monster of his imagination), whose favorite food is roasted fox. The fox beats a hasty retreat. Similar escapes are in store for an owl and a snake; both hightail it when they learn the particulars: tusks, claws, terrible jaws, eyes orange, tongue black, purple prickles on its back. When the gruffalo suddenly materializes out of the mouse's head and into the forest, the mouse has to think quick, declaring himself inedible as the ``scariest creature in the deep dark wood,'' and inviting the gruffalo to follow him to witness the effect he has on the other creatures. When the gruffalo hears that the mouse's favorite food is gruffalo crumble, he runs away. It's a fairly innocuous tale, with twists that aren't sharp enough and treachery that has no punch. The book tells the story of a quite witty little mouse on her way through the forest where she meets a few creatures who fancy her for dinner. She tries to scare them away by inventing a fierce (but not scary) looking friend with "knobbly knees and turned out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose", the Gruffalo.The story of this brave little mouse is simply wonderful. Its' language so well chosen that children will instantly start to read along with you. This is a very cute children's book with beautiful illustrations. The first time I came across it was at my children's Kindergarten and all the children were simply fascinated by the story. I would recommend it from 3 to 4 years onwards but it could well be read to older children as well. Enjoy!

Eine kleine Maus spaziert durch den Wald. Unterwegs begegnet sie nacheinander Fuchs, Eule und Schlange, die ein hungriges Auge auf die Maus werfen und sie jeweils zu einer Mahlzeit in ihre Höhle einladen. Die Maus schlägt diese Tiere in die Flucht, indem sie Ihnen vom gefährlichen Gruffalo erzählt, mit dem sie bereits eine Verabredung hat. Natürlich gibt es dieses Gruffalo gar nicht, aber dann begegnet die Maus ihm doch, und auch das Gruffalo würde die Maus gerne verspeisen. Die Maus lädt das Gruffalo auf einen gemeinsamen Spaziergang durch den Wald ein, um ihm zu zeigen, daß alle anderen Tiere Angst vor ihr haben. Fuchs, Eule und Schlange fliehen entsetzt, als sie das Gespann treffen, und die Maus bedroht nun ihrerseits das Gruffalo, das nun ebenfalls die Flucht antritt.
Die Geschichte ist hinreißend erzählt und toll bebildert. Der Text ist so, wie Kinder es lieben: die Dialoge und Formulierungen wiederholen sich immer wieder mit nur kleinen Abwandlungen.

I could never understand what all the fuss was about. Yes, the bookshops were absolutely plastered with it, I heard that my nephew loved it but then I found the Gruffalo just ugly and offputting, and thought I didn't have to follow every "fashion" in books, so for ages never bothered to buy this book for my own children. Eventually bought it in a "buy 2 get one free offer" thinking ok, let's give in, if everyone has it, we maybe should have it as well, but still put it away as a standby-just-in-case birthday present forgetting about it.
Then one of my children "did" Julia Donaldson books in reception, telling me he liked her books. They went to the theatre to see "The Gruffalo's child" as a play and obviously talked about "The Gruffalo" first.
Finally I found the copy I'd bought and gave it to my youngest for his 2nd birthday. Still (!!) it just flew around for a couple of weeks.
Suddenly, when I read it to the child who'd "done" it at school, my 2-year-old was suddenly very interested. And he's a child that normally can't really be "read to" (yet). With lots of other books, he runs away after about the first sentence. But this was one of the first books I could read to him from cover to cover. Now he also requests particular animals such as the snake or the fox and jumps in anticipation of the page when the Gruffaloooooo finally appears properly.
He loves it when the Gruffalo comes along, joins in when the Gruffalo is described (e.g. the colour of his eyes etc.) and finds it a bit scary but in the "I'm safe and just like a funny little shiver down my back" sort of way while lauging out loud. Certainly nothing for him to get nightmares about.
I don't think that very young children "get" the full meaning behind the story, but older children (around 5 years) certainly understand how clever the mouse is and how she frightens both the other animals and the Gruffalo who'd all love to eat her in a variety of hilarious dishes.
The rhymes are just absolutely great. I wish there would be more children's book authors like Julia Donaldson!
PS Needless to say we now have the other Julia Donaldson books, too (at last).
PPS And please don't be as ignorant as I was, do put this book in your shopping basket. Now. Then when it arrives, read it aloud.
