I'm really surprised this isn't available new. I bought it a couple of years ago and am now reading it for the third time.

It's based on a series of teaching statements made by one of the Karmapas in the distant past and Ole Nydahl fills in each chapter as commentary and explanation of the verses.

Ole Nydahl is a westerner from Denmark who has devoted his life to traveling and teaching Buddhism of the Tibetan variety with the Karma Kagyu lineage. He was originally a college teacher and it shows because I have to be honest, I think this guy explains Tibetan Buddhism better than any other source I've tried. I've been thinking about writing an old friend and turning them onto this but I really don't think I can do the guy justice yet. He's just a very, very good communicator on this subject.

Some people think he's controversial (because he's opinionated) but I really found this book to be jammed with valuable insights. I'm going to keep re-reading it until I think I've milked it dry, which will be a while.

Anyway, if you want this book try his web site--google "diamond way buddhism"--you don't have to buy it at ridiculous inflated prices from these used book dealers.

And if you do get it enjoy--and best of luck on your spiritual journey.

A poem written centuries ago by an enlightened man (the 3rd Karmapa Rangjung Dorje) can understandably be a bit difficult to interpret for a thoroughly unenlightened man like me, living in the 21st century.

Lama Ole Nydahl's explanation of this poem was invaluable. The Karmapa's poem consists of wishes that all beings achieve Buddhism's highest view, called "Mahamudra", or "The Great Seal" in English. Lama Ole's commentary unpacks each insightful line of this poem, and with modern language and relevant examples, brings them into a context we can all relate to.

If you're looking for exotic, 'holy' mumbo-jumbo, look elsewhere. But if you're interested in a practical explanation of the highest of Buddha's teachings, look no further. It doesn't get any better than this.

"The Great Seal" is a very fine translation of the 3rd Karmapa's Mahamudra Wishes with commentary by Lama Ole Nydahl, who was one of the closest western students of the great 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. The text teaches the highest view of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, the so-called Mahamudra ("Great Seal" in English). The topic of the text and commentary is the nature of the mind as understood through the practice lineages of Tibetan Buddhism and how the mind's true nature be realized.

Lama Ole Nydahl's commentary is fresh and modern, and the translation of the 3rd Karmapa's wishes themselves is very natural and understandable. It's incredible that such an old text can still sound so cutting edge.

I highly recommend this book to those practicing the Karma Kagyu Buddhist methods, and also to anyone interested to read something about the deepest understanding we have on the nature of mind.
