Corwin is a prince of Amber, the "immortal city from which every other city has taken its shape." All other worlds, including Earth, are shadows of that reality. Corwin has spent centuries on Earth as an amnesiac. But when someone in the family tries to kill him there, Corwin begins a search for his past. He quickly learns that his family has some very unusual powers. They can travel between Amber, its shadows, and Chaos by manipulating reality; use magical playing cards to communicate and travel instantaneously; and are able to walk the Pattern that created Amber. Corwin regains his memory, solves the mystery of his father Oberon's disappearance, and fulfills his destiny--only to disappear into Chaos.
Merlin searches for Corwin and his destiny as a son of both Amber and the Courts of Chaos. His story parallels Corwin's, answering many questions about Amber, Chaos, and the next generation in the family.
Many readers have complained that the series goes on too long and the ending is disappointing. None, however, would deny that it's filled with fascinating ideas, complex characters, and action-adventure. Don't miss a chance to make up your own mind. --Nona Vero

In the next five books, Merlin, son of Corwin, describes his search for his missing father. Whereas Corwin was a man of action who solved problems with his sword or his fists, Merlin is more cerebral. He is also a magician. Merlin has adventures every bit as fantastical as those of his father, and the story ends with Merlin in the most paradoxical situation imaginable.
Zelazny published the first Amber book in 1970, and the final volume came out in 1991. He obviously intended to continue the series because the chronicle abounds with unfinished business. Corwin's new Pattern never got explored. The nascent threat of Ghostwheel was never resolved. Frakir was left tied to a bedpost. It is unfortunate that these loose ends will never be tied up.
Roger Zelazny writes of unforgettable larger-than-life protagonists engaged in epic struggles, and his powers of description are nothing short of poetic.
All of the fantasies have to do with the royal family in a parallel universe of Amber. While not set in a time long, long ago these books do have a nice balance of modern mentalities, magic, and old world touches (swords, capes, etc.) I think that there is something for everyone in the Amber series: strong male characters, strong female characters, and marvelous settings.
Unfortunately, Roger gets lazy or his creative juices dried up after the first 5 books were completed. I found the writing of the Merlin series (Corwin's son) to be uninspired and not very imaginative. You know what, who cares? The first part of the series is so darned good it's worth it to buy this book.
I too read the series first during my early teenage years, and think it stands firmly among the classics: the Riverworld series by Phillip Jose Farmer, the Wizard series by John Varley, the World of Tiers series by Phillip Jose Farmer, the Valentine (sorry, the name is escaping me) series by Robert Silverberg, the early Shannara series by Terry Brooks, etc. Anyone else agree? Any other "classic" series I failed to mention?
The one thing most of these series have in common is that the early works were mind-blowing, original and inspired. But, in my humble opinion, when the author tried to go back and revisit the universe he created years ago, the attempt paled next to the original
