Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Chris Riddoch was born in Chester, UK, in 1949. At age 12, he received his first golf handicap - 12. By age 17, he'd reduced it to scratch. He represented his college (Borough Road) and his county (Cheshire), captaining the junior team at age 17. He had trials for England and was selected as reserve - unfortunately, no-one was sick on the day. His current handicap is six.

On leaving school, Chris dabbled with professional golf, but decided instead on an academic career. He obtained degrees in physical education and sports science, including a PhD in sports performance. Chris has been a teacher and research professor at four UK universities: Bath, Bristol, Middlesex, and Queen's (Belfast). He’s one of the UK’s top sports scientists, with more than 200 research articles on sport and exercise science to his name.

He's married to Maya and they live in Stockholm.

Das Buch fasst wesentliche Grundsätze zusammen, die tatsächlich helfen können, zuverlässig bessere Golfschläge zu machen. Der Autor stützt sich dabei auf wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen, allerdings ohne auf die Quellen im Text explizit einzugehen.

Wenn man keine golferischen Grundlagen hat, und sich mit der Technik des Golfschlags nicht ausreichend beschäftigt hat, ist dieses Buch wahrscheinlich nur bedingt hilfreich. Wenn man aber über praktische und theoretische Erfahrung verfügt, kann es dabei helfen, das eigene Golfspiel zu verbessern. Dabei ist einer der Hauptgedanken, dass für fortgeschrittene Spieler die Beschäftigung mit Positionen im Golfschlag während des Schwungs der Qualität des Schwungs abträglich ist.

Insgesamt ein tolles Buch, das man in wenigen Stunden ausgelesen hat. Mir hat es geholfen.

Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Die Ausrichtung auf Ziele außerhalb des eigenen Körpers klingt für die meisten Golfer im ersten Moment wahrscheinlich seltsam. Wie der Autor zeigt, ist diese Methode jedoch äußerst hilfreich, den persönlichen Golfschwung zu verbessern und konstanter zu machen.
Lesenswert für alle, die schon einiges im Golf probiert haben und gerne weiter kommen wollen.

Das Buch kann man nur wärmstens empfehlen. Ich hoffe, dass mit diesem Wissen mein swing besser wird und golfen noch mehr Spaß macht.

Upfront, I must say I am probably not typical of most people who have read this book and have written a review on it. Firstly, I have not really been able to play golf over the last four years due to a busy job, two young girls and other sporting priorities. Prior to that, I was the average hacker, playing once or twice a month and improving very little. I am also an exercise and sport scientist with a speciality in using biomechanical principles for exercise prescription. Some of my research has been into golf, mostly around how the body influences golf performance and how much variability there is in the golf swing form shot to shot. Therefore, I have always wondered what it is about golf that has generated such a large amount of biomechanical research compared to most other sports, and what it is about golf coaches who seem keener to try and use this research than many other coaching groups.
The research literature that this book is based on is contemporary motor control/learning theories that have quite wide support in other physical activities, with emerging evidence for golf. One of the issues with the specific golf motor learning literature is that it still mostly beginners that have been used as research participants with mostly putting and short iron play examined; whereas much of the biomechanical research has used higher performance and elite players, with the driver and long to mid-iron play mostly examined.
Nevertheless, I feel that this is an excellent evidence-based book that questions the very mechanical golf teaching paradigm used by some coaches that all players have to have the same swing characteristics in order to achieve good ball contact and flight. This is obviously not the case as can be seen on the PGA tours where many golfers have quite distinct swings but still consistently achieve excellent ball contact and flight across many challenging shots. Thus, the challenge for the golf coach and player is how to ensure consistently good ball contact while working around the specific constraints of their body e.g. short vs tall; muscular vs overweight; flexible vs tight; environmental conditions and goal of each shot. Therefore, if nothing else, I hope that this book (and the putting book that Prof Riddoch) will also written challenge golf coaches, sports scientists working with golfers and of course golfers to rethink the way they go about teaching and learning the golf swing.

This is really two books in one: a 5 Star book about the mental approach to golf and a 1 Star book about golf technique. Buy the book for the sections dealing with execution, external focus, and deliberate practice. Skip the chapters on golf swing technique. Most other books on mental approach to golf that I have read focused on controlling emotions and creating positive images while playing. This book has unique insights regarding the way your thought processes control your execution. It isn't happy talk about "thinking like a winner" either. Beginners have an internal focus (positions, body parts, motions, etc) while experts ave an external focus (target, trajectory, environment, etc). Anytime you start focusing internally you put yourself into "beginner mode", no matter how much you practice or how long you have been playing. This is a brilliant insight and I think it explains why many mid level golfers fail to continue to improve their scores.

Having coached the game of golf for almost 30 years I have for a long time believed there is a simpler way to learn golf. For the last 15 years I have been working on a simple process to help golfers learn based on my own studies and discoveries. I have never found any supporting academic evidence to support my ideas, until now. Chris Riddoch has provided me with evidence I could have only dreamed of and this book is a must read for golf coaches who are looking for new ideas to enhance their coaching skills and understanding. Just reading it for the second time in 3 weeks just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Well done Chris!!

I have been playing golf for 4 years now, and it started as a joke at my job that i couldn't swing the golf club. So that weekend i went to the local course and played 9 holes, while i was there on the the 8 hole i hit a remarkable shot that put me a foot from the pin. I thought to myself wow this can't be that hard. So i decided I was going to try to make it my weekend hobby and try to get good at it. I know i could have decided to go at it 2 different ways, a positional way or a natural way. The first mistake i made was going at it the positional way. I would get up to the tee box and have to think about elbow position, weight on the backswing, and etc and then i would chunk the ball or top it, i think you get the picture. Upon this season i decided hey im tired of positional golf and see if i could find some other way to learn this. I decided to buy this book after reading the first sample from my Kindle and it was exactly what i was looking for and it had all the answers on why i havent been able to remember position a and position b. I highly recommend this book to anyone whether you a really good player to a horrible player, either one will benefit.

As a golfer confounded by mechanics and swing thoughts, I found this book to be a great help. First of all, as someone with a tendency to try to hit the cover off the ball, resulting in a lot of mis-hits, I found the science very compelling... the power in the swing comes from a chain of events and trying to hit the ball hard, using muscles, inevitably breaks the chain... hence the mis-hits, shanks, and diminished results. Knowing the chain and sequence of events in the golf swing, and the science behind it all, gives me confidence to relax and let my swing happen naturally.

The author also provides a few helpful swing thoughts, and since I began incorporating them into my game, I have been hitting the ball further and more consistently than before.

It's refreshing to read a book that makes golf simpler, backed by science and focused on just a few key points.
