Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. In The Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father. To call the elder Walls's childrearing style laissez faire would be putting it mildly. As Rose Mary and Rex, motivated by whims and paranoia, uprooted their kids time and again, the youngsters (Walls, her brother and two sisters) were left largely to their own devices. But while Rex and Rose Mary firmly believed children learned best from their own mistakes, they themselves never seemed to do so, repeating the same disastrous patterns that eventually landed them on the streets. Walls describes in fascinating detail what it was to be a child in this family, from the embarrassing (wearing shoes held together with safety pins; using markers to color her skin in an effort to camouflage holes in her pants) to the horrific (being told, after a creepy uncle pleasured himself in close proximity, that sexual assault is a crime of perception; and being pimped by her father at a bar). Though Walls has well earned the right to complain, at no point does she play the victim. In fact, Walls' removed, nonjudgmental stance is initially startling, since many of the circumstances she describes could be categorized as abusive (and unquestioningly neglectful). But on the contrary, Walls respects her parents' knack for making hardships feel like adventures, and her love for them--despite their overwhelming self-absorption--resonates from cover to cover. --Brangien Davis

This is a beautifully rendered, poignant account of a totally dysfunctional family. It is little wonder that this book won numerous awards and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. I simply could not put this book down, as the author had me transfixed with her story of growing up in such an unusual family.
Born to highly intelligent, creative parents who marched to the beat of a different drum, the author and her siblings had a difficult childhood. With a dreamer of a father who battled the bottle and a mother who was somewhat irresponsible and probably mentally ill, family life was a study in contrasts with an emphasis on independence, as well as artistic and intellectual pursuits, while spurning creature comforts, stability, and the much longed for three hots and a cot. This free wheeling philosophy, espoused by the author's parents, subjected their children to hunger, homelessness, and a nomadic existence. Yet, the children were resilient and thrived, even as their parents went on a downward spiral.
The author's story is positively riveting. It is a story of survival and eventual prosperity within mainstream society. It is a story about keeping one's head, when all around one others are losing theirs. The author's journey is certainly an amazing one, and I for one am delighted that she chose to share it with others. Those who enjoy reading memoirs and autobiographies will, undoubtedly, very much enjoy this one and be fascinated and moved by the author's singular, well-told story. Bravo!

Jeannette Walls describes her childhood in California and Midwest America and later in New York City. Her parents - her father an almost permanent drunk dreamer and nonconformist and her mother an underestimated artist and writer - bring up four children without knowing how to make ends meet as the - irregular - income goes away regularly for booze and gambling. Nonetheless all of them get a wide range of knowledge due to their parents' love of books and science and learn to survive in the most unfriendly circumstances. As there is always something happening in Jeannette's childhood, reading the book never gets boring.
The author's intention was to write down her experience so she can find peace with her past and her parents, which in the end is happening. Fine. The account is mostly written in the style of detached description with only few hints to how the author really felt during her childhood. You can only guess how much she and her siblings suffered from the circumstances and you start wondering why only one of them stepped into her parents' shoes. They all must have struggled a lot more than you can take from the book to be able to live their dreams - a pity the description of this struggle has so little space in the book. So the book - though very interesting - wasn't truely moving.

Nachdem ich dieses Buch in deutscher Übersetzung regelrecht verschlungen habe, wollte ich unbedingt die Originalversion kennenlernen. Zwar musste ich - da mein englischer Wortschatz eher begrenzt ist - öfter mein Wörterbuch zu Rate ziehen nehmen, ich habe es jedoch in keiner Sekunde bereut. Die Schilderungen von J. Walls kommen in ihrer Muttersprache noch beeindruckender und fesselnder rüber. "The Glass Castle" ist eines der besten Bücher, das ich in letzter Zeit kennengelernt habe.

Fabulous US family story
Very nice read about a peculiar family living in the margin in the US and how a kid gets to succeed in life notwithstanding her past.
