If you are new in using open source GIS or if you want to expand your horizon in the open source world, choose this book. Though the book introduces many different open source GIS platforms, it focuses on QGIS and GRASS and for the former, it something like the missing manual (though there exists a comprehensive documentation on the QGIS site). The book contains many informations from the installation up to complicated raster- or vector-calculations. The only withdraw - QGIS is developing fast, the most recent version contains several new features, which are not yet covered by the latest edition of the book. Nevertheless 4 stars.

Just FYI that this book is a reprint of the popular "Desktop GIS: Mapping the Planet with Open Source Tools" that was out of print (by another publisher). Locate Press is proud to bring it back into print, with some updated content. We had to drop the colour images in this print version, but they are available on the book website. If there is significant interest in a colour version, we may make it available in the future, though the printing costs are 3-4x higher.
p.s. Couldn't file the review without picking stars, but I really _do_ love this book :)

This book is the second edition of Desktop GIS: Mapping the Planet with Open Source Tools, so all the good reviews are still true for this uptodate edition. the author is an expert of this topic and the founder/creator of the (imho) best free opensource gis: QUANTUM GIS.
So why just 4 stars? Well, on the books website under changes between first and second edition you can read: "A short discussion of the SpatiaLite spatial database is included." This is not the case, because this "short discussion" (chapter 9.6) is less than one full page(!) and is only an "announcement", that you can use spatialite with qgis. (If the free and open-source spatialite would be sold as a commercial product, the company would give more info in the product-flyer/info-brochure than there is in the book!) so this is a great disappointment,because qgis is the first (and only?) opensource gis, which has native support for spatialite and learning from the auhor how to use spatialite (with qgis) would have been very fine...
So - in my personal opinion - a great book, but no "real" info about spatialite. If you do not already own a copy of the first edition its definitve worth buying
