4.0 von 5 Sternen Convincing 18. Oktober 2012

The Genever Trap plot carries all the conviction that one would expect from the former head of MI5. Stella Remington writes well and perhaps, one day in the future it will be possible to see copies of her reports while working in MI5. My guess they would be masterly examples of clarity and subtle insinuations on matters of which she may have disapproved.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Liz, Fane, Peggy, Martin, MI5 & the curious case of the cyber saboteur 5. Oktober 2012
Von Sharon Isch - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
This 7th in former MI5 Director General Stella Rimington's "Liz Carlyle" series takes on a case of cyber-sabotage connected to a joint US/UK defense program that's so top-secret not even Liz and her cohorts at MI5 and 6 knew of it until an old acquaintance from Russia turns up to warn Liz that there's a saboteur lurking somewhere in the program who's working for another country. But what country? Dunno.

And might that have something to do with why and how that rogue drone over the Nevada desert suddenly started engaging in destructive acts its programmers never programmed it to do?

Before it's all over, not only the US and UK but also Russia, Switzerland, France and both Koreas will have become involved, and the cast of characters, good and bad, will have grown to the point where this reader found herself having a hard time keeping up with who they all were and what country or character or plot thread they were connected to.

Meanwhile, back on the romantic front, Martin's still very much in the picture and this time poor old Charles doesn't even merit a mention. Hmmmm.

Not among my favorites in this series. But a good read nonetheless. Will probably have greater appeal to those more cyber-savvy than I.

3.0 von 5 Sternen European intrigue 6. September 2012
Von Shelleyrae - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The Geneva Trap is the 7th book by former MI5 agent Stella Rimmington featuring British counter terrorism agent, Liz Carlyle. Set in the present time, Liz Carlyle is approached by a former acquaintance, now a Russian agent, with information regarding the infiltration of a top secret project known as Operation Clarity involving the development of unmanned drones. Despite the vehement denial of any possible unauthorised access, Liz's investigation uncovers a message that seems to have allowed the top secret program to be breached by persons unknown. As Liz and her team attempt to trace the information back to its source, the action moves from Geneva to Marseilles where Liz disappears, leaving her team, and her lover Martin, frantic.

Rimington's experience shows in her intricate plots of investigation and espionage. In the shadowy world of intelligence its difficult to know who to trust so it takes painstaking information gathering to confirm or deny rumours, threats or theories. The Geneva Trap reveals the labyrinth of intrigue where double agents thrive and governments must always be on guard against infiltration. An aspect of the plot I found particularly fascinating was the idea of second generation 'sleepers' utilised by the North Korean government.

A subplot within the novel involves Liz's mother's partner whose daughter has escaped a French protest group but is being threatened by the leader to fund their bid for an arsenal. Liz enlists Martin's help in finding out more about organisation which ends with Martin in danger facing off the thwarted man.

The pace of The Geneva Trap is fair, somewhat slowed by the crowding of various governments and their agents though it does pick up as the story draws to an end and the pieces begin to fall into place. There are some interesting twists and turns and loose ends are tied up neatly in the conclusion.

While I did find some of the characters tended towards the cliche - thuggish hard drinking Russians, smug, boorish Americans and inscrutable Asians, a handful, such as Liz, Martin and Peggy, are well developed as I would expect, given they are long term characters in the series. I liked Liz's no nonsense attitude, the relationship between Liz and Martin is low key but humanises them both. Peggy caught my interest as a neophyte agent finding her feet in her first investigation with any real responsibility.

This is the first of the Liz Carlyle series I have read, though I thought it worked well enough as a stand alone and I did enjoy it. It provides a good mix of action and intrigue with a ring of authenticity I am sure espionage fans will appreciate.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Drones, high-tech-encryption, very up-to-date! 12. August 2014
Von I. Lembcke - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
(First published by me at Goodreads)
Read from February 13 to 16, 2014
Given her age I just hope that this will not be her last book in the series.
Ah well, just finished it and it seems like she may chose to end this series with this book.
The theme of the book, a highly classified crypto-protocol for newly developed drones is top-notch and realistic even now, without straining too much into SF.
Given the high stakes, people are murdered without hesitation.
The question of who is the real enemy is muddled and open till near the end.
A second storyline is equally dangerous for the life of a few of the minor characters, a daughter of one of the persons (name I forgot) is involved with a anarchistic commune but tries to leave it behind in France by moving back to the UK. Only they need her and will not leave her alone.
Highly recommended.
Added to the copy&paste job from Goodreads, August 12th, 2014:
obviously I was wrong, the 8th book in the Liz Carlyle-series was published 2014. Nearly missed it, as I had not foreseen another book from Stella Rimington and therefore not set an authoralarm.com (great website, highly recommended and useful). Will read it, probably not so soon as I have other books on my TBR-list, some already bought.
2.0 von 5 Sternen PHANTOM WRITER 10. Mai 2014
Von Enrique Bozzo - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I have read all of Stella Rimington's novels with great relish, except this one.
It took me no more than one page or two to realize that she didn't write this one.
The individual incidents are almost vulgar in their simplicity, the subtlety is gone, so is the heroine's usually penetrating personality and intelligence, as well as Rimington's notoriously knowledgeable spy craft. The heroine, as well as the other characters, are now shallow. Both Stella and Liz are absent here.

Besides the nonsensical main argument of a Russian spy who -risking his own life- warns the UK-USA out of the kindness of his soul, there are various ridiculous mistakes such as monitoring email communication from an important and very secret defense institution (MoD), but "..we simply wanted to keep track on who was being emailed, not what the emails said." So what was being leaked was not important, and the emails could have been only asking for a sexual encounter!!

I hope Ms. Rimington goes back to writing, although experience tells me that when a phantom writer has being hired the towel has been thrown in.

As it is, I prefer James Bond's films' female boss, even if she is in MI6.

A real shame.
