What the name of Thonet is in the history of bent-wood furniture is comparable to the reputation of the Dutch designer and architect Rietveld in the modern evolution of curved metal tubing for chairs and tables. Associated with the designations "De Stijl", "Red and Blue" and "Schroeder Huis", Rietveld worked together with Walter Gropius of Bauhaus fame on new designs for furniture, many of which today are acknowleged masterpieces of the art. This handsome book draws on the archives and depots of museums and of the Italian firm Cassina, which holds the exclusive rights to Rietveld's work, to present to the reader a definitive study of Rietveld's furniture designs, along with an interesting account of his life and career. A list of his one-man exhibitions and books by and about Rietveld are added features contributing to the high demand and scarcity of this long out-of-print book.
