Kurzbeschreibung

Fujian Adventure brings to life the people and places of "Fukien," the ancient cradle of Chinese seafaring and Marco Polo's legendary port of Zayton.

Meet the "real Sinbad," Admiral Zhenghe (aka Sanbao)l the abbot of the ancient Southern Shaolin Kung Fu Temple; the Hui'an maidens who cover their heads, bare their bellies, and only sleep with their husbands 3 nights a year; the firewalkers who brave flaming coals bearing heavy idols; the melancholy Miss Mo, who became the sea goddess Mazu; Zayton’s famous marionette makers; the Anxi farmers whose ancestors produced the tea tossed overboard during the Boston Tea Party. Visit China’s first Protestant church and the planet’s last Manichean temple.

Explore the Roaring 20's "Richest square mile on earth,” Gulangyu, which even today has over 1,000 “Amoy Deco” mansions. Discover the secret of the Hakka roundhouses that Nixon and the CIA thought were missile silos, and then visit the nearby Amoy tiger preserve. Enjoy scenic Sanming, with China's 4th largest gem beds, China’s largest sleeping Buddha, Ming Dynasty villages, enchanting caverns and underground lakes. Marvel at Wuyi Mountain’s 2,000-year-old Min Palace, and the Eden-like biological diversity that drew French naturalists in the 1700s to study the rare plants, king cobras and 33 foot pythons.

And there's Fujian food. Moliere said "Man should eat to live, not live to eat," but Dr. Bill says, "Moliere never ate Chinese food—especially in Fujian, where folks will eat anything that does not eat them first.

Fujian's torturous terrain ("8 parts mountain, 1 part water, 1 part fields") not only gave rise to an innovative and tough people but also to more local dialects and greater cultural diversity—including cuisines—than any other province. Every hill, valley and river has a story behind it, and Dr. Bill invites you to explore them.

Author Bill Brown, Prof. of Organizational Behavior and Business Strategy at School of Management, Xiamen University, was Fujian's first foreign permanent resident and has driven over 200,000 km. around China, including Mongolia, the Gobi Desert and Tibet, but he still considers Fujian the most fascinating province for foreigners.

In addition to textbooks such as Art of Business Warfare (Beijing University Press) and Organizational Behavior (Jiangsu People's Press), Dr. Brown has written ten books about Fujian, written and hosted several TV documentaries, including a 62-episode mini-series, "Fujian in a Foreigner's Eyes", and hosts, Monday to Saturday nights, the Fujian HXTV travel program 《酷游大玩家》.

In 2014, Bill was awarded in Beijing as 1 of "China's Top 10 Educators, 1954-2014".

This book by Dr. Brown is one of the most enthralling I have encountered! I had never known there was so much of the world's history tied to this province of China, and it's truly amazing how Dr. Brown puts it all in perspective. Great writing, with great photography!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating testimony from one of China's ten most famous foreign professors 7. Mai 2014
Von Larisa Smirnova - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Nowadays, there are certainly plenty of books on Chinese history on the market. What makes Bill's book absolutely unique is that he does not focus on emperors and dynasties, but on the historic memory of the common Chinese people. The memory of the Chinese people is so fascinatingly full of stories, fables, and myths. These stories were kept in extended families, in folk tradition, in neighborhoods. From this historic memory, contemporary China emerges as a diverse popular mosaic, not as a monolite splendid empire that we are used to from other history accounts.
Bill Brown was recently awarded as one of China's Ten Outstanding Foreign Experts since 1954 to date.
He has lived and worked in China for 28 years, and speaks not only mandarin but also the local language of South-Eastern Fujian, known here as minnan dialect. His singular experience is what makes this book so special.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Humor, history, and honest travel guide 13. April 2014
Von Carylene Gentry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
"The Fujian Adventure" starts with the first page of the book. Whether you are looking for history or humor or an honest travel guide, Dr. Brown's book is filled with first-hand reports and insights that can only be gained from decades of living, traveling, and working in China. Dr. Brown is a walking wit. His jokes range from side-splitting to eye-rolling, but they are never boring. In 2009, we used all his available books to give us the happy push we needed to leave our American nest and cross the Pacific to start our own Fujian Adventure of living, traveling, and working in China. We have never regretted our book purchases or the decisions they supported. If you are considering a Fujian Adventure, your first step should be to read Dr. Brown's books (this one plus any others you may find here).

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Wonderful Guide to Fujian from an Expert! 2. Mai 2014
Von Janet L Brandon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Dr. William Brown and his family have lived and explored this Province of China and beyond for over 25 years, so it goes without saying they have first hand experience. Dr. Brown has also done extensive research on the history and early influences of Fujian which makes it what it is today. You will enjoy his often humorous insights, attention to fine details, beautiful photographs and his own comical illustrations. If you're planning to explore the region it is a must read, but even if you are not planning a personal visit, you'll experience Fujian from the pages of this book. A truly enjoyable read.
