"Today we're going to show you eight silent ways to kill a man." The first line of this 1974 sf war story still grabs hard: The Forever War, winner of both Hugo and Nebula awards, is a fine choice to launch Millennium's "SF Masterworks" series of classic reissues. Future soldier William Mandella's service in the interstellar "Forever War" chillingly echoes Vietnam, where Joe Haldeman was severely wounded and won the Purple Heart. Afterwards, many real-life veterans found themselves distanced and alienated from US society: thanks to starflight's time dislocations, Mandella returns from weeks or months of combat duty to an Earth which after centuries of change is no longer his home. Though armed with increasingly futuristic weaponry--laser fingers, nova bombs, stasis fields--the infantry still suffers the long agonising waits, the sudden flurry and horror of battle, the shock of loss in a futile war without glory or glamour. But there's still room for tenderness, and for a satisfying ending as the cruel equations of relativistic time finally work in Mandella's favour. Incidentally, this is the first full British edition. When The Forever War was serialised, the magazine editor vetoed one section; it was omitted from the 1974 novel and is now restored. Highly recommended. --David Langford

In the 1970s Joe Haldeman approached more than a dozen different publishers before he finally found one interested in The Forever War. The book went on to win both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, although a large chunk of the story had been cut out before it saw publication. Now Haldeman and Avon Books have released the definitive version of The Forever War, published for the first time as Haldeman originally intended. The book tells the timeless story of war, in this case a conflict between humanity and the alien Taurans. Humans first bumped heads with the Taurans when we began using collapsars to travel the stars. Although the collapsars provide nearly instantaneous travel across vast distances, the relativistic speeds associated with the process means that time passes slower for those aboard ship. For William Mandella, a physics student drafted as a soldier, that means more than 27 years will have passed between his first encounter with the Taurans and his homecoming, though he himself will have aged only a year. When Mandella finds that he can't adjust to Earth after being gone so long from home, he reenlists, only to find himself shuttled endlessly from battle to battle as the centuries pass. --Craig E. Engler

Moving and fascinating 3. Juli 2001
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
A very moving story about the tragedy and stupidity of war, a war that lasts over a thousand years for the people on Earth and only a couple of decades for the combatants, due to relativity. (Read the Synopsis above.)

If you liked 'Starship Troopers' -the book, not the film- you will most probably enjoy 'The Forever War'. It is easily and quickly read, still making you think about it, though. Don't misunderstand me, that the book is 'flat'; it delivers its message powerfully enough. The story has no more, no less than it needs to be good, gripping and provocative. It just probably doesn't go into enough details for people who only like epic stories such as 'Dune'.

This edition is the definitive version as originally written by the author, with a preface by him explaining a little about his intentions while writing the story.

After all my years of SF-reading The Forever War still belongs to my personal top five books, easily up there with Dune, Neuromancer and Hyperion. But while those all take the brainy approach, Haldeman goes straight to the guts. It's still very intelligent, mind you, but it's story doesn't flow a second slower because of that. It's pacifistic without being preachy, perhaps remotely comparable to Kubrick's approach in "Full Metal Jacket".

A classic! 27. Juli 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
A science fiction classic. Haldeman's book chronicles a war between humankind and a race of aliens. Haldeman stays true to modern physics: since warriors must travel great distances (with the help of relativistic worm hole trickery), they age only a few years while hundreds of years elapse back on earth. Thus, soldiers find themselves returning from battle to earth generations after their families have passed away, and political changes have rendered their reasons for fighting moot. A tremendous story and very satisfying to the scientifically minded.

If you enjoy reading Military Sci-Fi, this is one of the best books in this genre. If you loved Heinlein's "Starship Trooper", you'll see the similarities in the "Forever War". Lesen Sie weiter...

I thought this book would be kind of bad because it was written so long ago. Science Fiction can get outdated quickly. I was wrong. THIS BOOK WAS VERY INTERESTING.
