From Booklist

At a glance, the premise of this sequel to Gifford's highly successful The Wind Chill Factor seems strained. After all, it's been almost 20 years since his tragic hero, John Cooper, found himself up to his eyeballs in Minnesota blizzards and Nazis building a Fourth Reich. How old are these Nazis now? And how old is Cooper? Since shattering the Nazis and discovering that he's hopelessly, unrequitedly in love with the sister he never knew, he's been living quietly and watching lots of old movies. It's hard to avoid thinking that Cooper may be a bit long in the tooth for a rematch, but The First Sacrifice is a terrific read--good enough to allow the suspension of any and all disbelief. Gifford has taken the realities of neo-Nazism in contemporary Germany, the breakup of the Soviet Union, and the old fears a strong Germany stirs, and thrown Cooper and his sister into another scheme for world domination. It's a big, complex stew of a book, told from the perspective of a dozen fascinating characters, many of whom gripe that they're just too old for gun battles, assassinations, and mayhem in blizzards; but readers looking for a Ludlumesque diversion or the latest Gifford won't care. Thomas Gaughan

From Kirkus Reviews

Twenty years after The Wind Chill Factor, John Cooper goes to post-unification Germany and saves the world from the Fourth Reich- -again. John's been leading a quiet life in Boston, nursing a heart broken in the previous book by Lise Koller, who, in addition to being the love of his life, happens to be the sister he didn't know he had until he met and fell in love with her. He's also trying to come to terms with his family's attraction to Nazism when beautiful reporter Beate Hubermann arrives from Germany with a message from Lise. Lise's daughter, Erika, has disappeared, and rather than turn to her enormously successful and powerful businessman husband, Wolf, Lise contacts John, whom she hasn't seen in 20 years, for help. Lise doesn't feel she can trust Wolf, and with reason--in addition to trying to take over the world, Wolf is also having Lise slowly poisoned to death. John flies to Germany and wanders into the latest Nazi revival movement, code-named SPARTAKUS. Also involved are superannuated American intelligence agents; the Russians; a retired Texas tycoon with a slightly odd accent; and the mysterious Professor, who is extremely displeased to hear of John's meddling. When Erika, who is holed up in the Bavarian Alps, discovers that her father had her boyfriend killed (for leaking secret information about SPARTAKUS), she comes out of hiding to foil Wolf's plans. Wolf orders his daughter killed and speeds up the signing of the agreement between Germany and Russia that will set the SPARTAKUS process in motion. The meeting never takes place, however, and in the final chapter, a bloody shootout in a snowstorm decides the fates of both Germany and the sibling-lovers. Fast-paced and engrossing. The players may be older, but the action hasn't slowed in this exciting sequel that was worth the wait. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The First Sacrifice was a loaner from a relative who thought I'd love the setting of the book - Berlin, a city near and dear to my heart. And for me, it was the best part of the book - his descriptions of the city, its layout and familar haunts made me "homesick."

The plot, on the otherhand, left much to be desired. This may be a function of me reading the sequel without having read the previous story - there are allusions to events that happened "earlier", but it didn't seem to make a huge difference to me. Essentially the story deals with the resurgence of a 4th Reich in the newly re-united Germany, with plenty of intrigue, twists, and double-dealing characters. Similar to a Le Carre or Ludlum book, but not nearly as well written or as tight.

The book would make for a decent airplane read, short of that, not recommended.

The first sacrifice was to the readers of this book. The story really stretches believability and for no reason. Change some of the characters and you would buy into it. Another issue I had was the confusing sub plots that seemed to be through in just to add another 50 pages to keep up the size of Clancy or Ludlum books. Some of the characters were interesting and the end third of the book came together, but all in all it took an heck of an effort to get to the end. This is a book that takes all of your concentration to get through, and for all that work the pay off is not that rewarding.

I don't know what is up with the other reviews but I could not put this book down.
