When Timothy Garton Ash graduated from Oxford in 1978, he went to live in Berlin, ostensibly to research and write about Nazism. But once there, he gradually immersed himself in a study of the repressive political culture of East Germany. As if to return the favor, that culture--in the form of the dreaded East German secret police, the "Stasi"--secretly began studying him. As was Stasi's practice, over the years its study produced a considerable paper trail. After the fall of the East German communist regime, a government apparatus was established to allow those targeted to see their Stasi files, and Garton Ash discovered and pored over his. He then set about to interview the people who made this gross intrusion possible, the several case officers, and the numerous regular-citizen informers. The result is nothing short of a journey into the darkest recesses of the totalitarian mind, taking its place honorably alongside 1984 and Darkness at Noon.

In a totalitarian state, who informs and why? How truthful are the files, anyway? These questions animate Ash's extraordinary investigation of his investigators, the East German secret police. Ash, an Oxford professor of history, lived in East Berlin in his student days around 1980--an obvious cover for spying in the Stasi weltanschauung. His diary, contemporaneous with the Stasi's surveillance of him, while a useful documentary check on informants' reports, rather embarrasses Ash for the "insouciance with which [he] barged into other people's lives," and so he examines his personality in youth and how fickle his memory of that time is. That he writes fluidly and precisely only enhances the factual material, which culminates in visits to the people who informed on him and to the officers who hooked and controlled the informers. Astute and absorbing, Ash's analysis of his dossier reads like a good cold war spy novel, none the less so that only the fate of himself, rather than the world, is in the balance. Gilbert Taylor

It reads like a spy-thriller, but Timothy Garton Ash's book 'The File' is based on research and personal experience. Garton Ash's language is compassionate, gripping, and educated. An exciting look into the effect the Stasi had on the people of the GDR and the effect that the opening of the secret police files is having now, this book will make good reading for both scholars and laypersons alike.

Get ready to read a book that won't let you go. Reporter Ash opens his STASI (East German Secret Police) file and finds old friends were really spies, living in an Orwellian world turned real.
He tracks them down and asks why they betrayed him. One cause is the cynical, fear-based totalitarianism they lived under. Another is a common trait among the "old friends" themselves: The lack of fatherly love. Their fathers were either away at war or lost in the Holocaust, or were distanced from their families by professional obligations.
The story comes full circle, when Garton Ash takes a lesson in this discovery, turns off his computer and goes to be with his sons. Hmmm.

For me as a former inhabitant of East Germany it is moving to see how deeply Timothy Garton Ash understood what living under communism really meant. I bought this book for my daughter who was born after the 1989 revolution, but then could not resist reading it myself. The book is not simply about a Stasi file, but also gives a very authentic picture of life in East Germany around 1980. It brought back to me many of my own memories, and while reading I was surprised time and again how precisely the author, a visitor from the West, understood what was going on in our part of the world. If you are lucky enough not to have experienced living in a dictatorship, but would like to understand, I highly recommend Garton Ash's books. In my opinion, books like this greatly contribute to the "Aufarbeitung" of our history. Too many people today would like to forget, or have romantically distorted memories of East Germany. Garton Ash's books make the absurdity of life under communism visible, certainly owing to his double perspective: a very intimate knowledge of the communist reality, combined with the outsider's independent mind who can compare what he sees, with the reality of a free society. Apart from this, Garton Ash's writings about East Germany are a pleasure to read because of his thorough knowlege of German history and his love for German literature.

Interesting but lacking....
