Kurzbeschreibung

November 2008 Ender's Shadow

This boxed set contains Orson Scott Card's Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, and Shadow of the Giant.

Ender's Shadow

Welcome to Battle School.

Growing up is never easy. But try living on the mean streets as a child begging for food and fighting like a dog with ruthless gangs of starving kids who wouldn't hesitate to pound your skull into pulp for a scrap of apple. If Bean has learned anything on the streets, it's how to survive. And not with fists. He is way too small for that. But with brains.

Bean is a genius with a magician's ability to zero in on his enemy and exploit his weakness.

What better quality for a future general to lead the Earth in a final climactic battle against a hostile alien race, known as Buggers. At Battle School Bean meets and befriends another future commander - Ender Wiggin - perhaps his only true rival.

Only one problem: for Bean and Ender, the future is now.

Shadow of the Hegemon

The War is over, won by Ender Wiggin and his team of brilliant child-warriors. The enemy is destroyed, the human race is saved. Ender himself refuses to return to the planet, but his crew has gone home to their families, scattered across the globe. The Battle School is no more.

But with the external threat gone, the Earth has become a battlefield once more. The children of the Battle School are more than heroes; they are potential weapons that can bring power to the countries that control them. One by one, all of Ender's Dragon Army are kidnapped. Only Bean escapes; and he turns for help to Ender's brother Peter.

Peter Wiggin, Ender's older brother, has already been manipulating the politics of Earth from behind the scenes. With Bean's help, he will eventually rule the world.

Shadow Puppets

Earth and its society has been changed irrevocably in the aftermath of Ender Wiggin's victory over the Formics--the unity enforced upon the warring nations by an alien enemy has shattered. Nations are rising again, seeking territory and influence, and most of all, seeking to control the skills and loyalty of the children from the Battle School.

But one person has a better idea. Peter Wiggin, Ender's older, more ruthless, brother, sees that any hope for the future of Earth lies in restoring a sense of unity and purpose. And he has an irresistible call on the loyalty of Earth's young warriors. With Bean at his side, the two will reshape our future.

Here is the continuing story of Bean and Petra, and the rest of Ender's Dragon Army, as they take their places in the new government of Earth.

Shadow of the Giant

Bean, once the smallest student at the Battle School, and Ender Wiggin's right hand, has grown to be a power on Earth. He served the Hegemon as strategist and general in the terrible wars that followed Ender's defeat of the alien empire attacking Earth. Now he wishes for a safe place to build a family--something he has never known--but there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies--old enemies from the days in Ender's Jeesh, new enemies from the wars on Earth. To find security, Bean and Petra must once again follow in Ender's footsteps. They must leave Earth behind, in the control of the Hegemon, and look to the stars.

Pressestimmen

"This fine follow-up to Ender's Shadow features that novel's hero, Bean (now a young man), wrestling with Card's trademark: superbly real moral and ethical dilemmas....The complexity and serious treatment of the book's young protagonists will attract many sophisticated YA readers, while Card's impeccable prose, fast pacing and political intrigue will appeal to adult fans of spy novels, thrillers, and science fiction."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Shadow of the Hegemon

"The novels of Orson Scott Card's Ender series are an intriguing combination of action, military and political strategy, elaborate war games and psychology." --USA Today

"You can't step into the same river twice, but Card has gracefully dipped twice into the same inkwell--once for Ender's Game, and again for his stand-alone 'parallel novel'. As always, everyone will be struck by the power of Card's children, always more and less than human, perfect yet struggling, tragic yet hopeful, wondrous and strange."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Ender's Shadow

"The publishing equivalent of a Star Wars blockbuster." --New York Daily News on Ender's Shadow

"The author's superb storytelling and his genuine insight into the moral dilemmas that lead good people to commit questionable actions make this title a priority purchase for most libraries." --Library Journal on Ender's Shadow

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Orson Scott Card is best known for his science fiction novel Ender's Game and it’s many sequels that expand the Ender Universe into the far future and the near past.  Those books are organized into the Ender Quintet, the five books that chronicle the life of Ender Wiggin; the Shadow Series, that follows on the novel Ender’s Shadow and are set on Earth; and the Formic Wars series, written with co-author Aaron Johnston, that tells of the terrible first contact between humans and the alien “Buggers”.

Card has been a working writer since the 1970s. Beginning with dozens of plays and musical comedies produced in the 1960s and 70s, Card's first published fiction appeared in 1977 -- the short story "Gert Fram" in the July issue of The Ensign, and the novelet version of "Ender's Game" in the August issue of Analog.

The novel-length version of Ender’s Game, published in 1984 and continuously in print since then, became the basis of  the 2013 film, starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin.

Card was born in Washington state, and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he runs occasional writers’ workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University.

He is the author many sf and fantasy novels, including the American frontier fantasy series “The Tales of Alvin Maker” (beginning with Seventh Son), There are also stand-alone science fiction and fantasy novels like Pastwatch and Hart’s Hope. He has collaborated with his daughter Emily Card on a manga series, Laddertop. He has also written contemporary thrillers like Empire and historical novels like the monumental Saints and the religious novels Sarah and Rachel and Leah. Card’s recent work includes the Mithermages books (Lost Gate, Gate Thief), contemporary magical fantasy for readers both young and old.

Card lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Kristine Allen Card,  He and Kristine are the parents of five children and several grandchildren.

5.0 von 5 Sternen just as good 26. November 2012
Von akira18
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
After finishing the Enders-Quartet-Series I started on this one. I did not regret it. They are as good as the first four and drew me into the story. So anyone who can find it in him or her to see beyond the own horizon, these books are a must read. And all togehter, the stories are not that far fetched, as they might seem and the characters are drawn up lifelike. I loved all these books, and just hope, that the other books of this author can live up to them.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Tragically Hopeful 10. April 2009
Von Otto - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Wonderful collection of all four Ender's Shadow series books. Though I personally expected that I would prefer the Ender's Series to its Shadow Series counterpart, these books took a hold of me and didn't let me go until the very last page. Mr Card details a wonderfully complex and ever changing, yet easy to follow narrative. Having personally read hundreds of books, I have never recommended a series more strongly that I have the Ender's Game series. I have yet to read Ender in Exile, but plan on picking that up quite soon. Deep, political, emotional, philosophical, psychological, and religious questions are brought up here. Though Card is more conservative than I am, he offers a balanced perspective in his works. Most impressive, I felt, was how he turns thoughts into action, showing the growth of his characters and ensuring that you never feel like you're reading through the filler to get to the next good part.

Highly recommended for any reader, but particularly for those who want to make reading a more solid part of their life and haven't yet found that right book to do so with. This series did that for quite a few people I know, and I'm sure it could do it for you as well.

5.0 von 5 Sternen I think box sets were created for OCD people... 11. September 2010

...like me! I love getting a great price on fantastic books that fit nicely into one little box. This is seriously the best deal you are going to find on these books, which happen to be amazing. The way Cards characters think, the plot twists, and drawn out debates of morality on various issues are all absolute genius. Also if you read Ender's Game then it is a real treat to read this series and see where all his buds from battle school ended up the whole series is rather nostalgic. When you see characters like Petra, Peter, and Bean influence the course of world events it gives you a sense of closure for Enders past on earth.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This series is better than the original Ender series 27. Juni 2010
Von Alissa Frederick - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Whereas the Ender series starts falling apart in "Xenocide" and "Children of the Mind" is just annoying, the Bean series stays exciting and enjoyable. I had almost completely forgotten Bean until I picked up "Ender's Shadow", but now I think I love him more than I love Ender. He is well-rounded, heroic and tragic. This is a must read for anyone who enjoyed "Ender's Game".

5.0 von 5 Sternen Out of over hundreds of books, the first two in the set are at the top 7. Mai 2009
Von ClosetNerd - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
As this is a box set I will rate all four together:
Style: A+
Plot: A-
Character Development: A+
Uniqueness: A
Enjoyment: A-

As to the first three negative recommendations, they are based on the actual physical qualities of the set. It is not hardcover, but four paperbacks in a box at a cheaper price.

I would recommend this to those who thoroughly enjoyed Ender's Game. Ender's Shadow is one of the best sequels ever written and is an indispensable companion to Ender's Game. The other books are more political and societal in nature. Many friends who have read the aforementioned books, didn't enjoy the final 3 simply due to the political subplots. Overall, I enjoyed them all, but if you have never read a book with political (fictional) undertones, I would suggest purchasing Ender's Shadow and one of the others separately first.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Enders Shadow Series 7. Mai 2009
Von M. Balt - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
All of these books are an excellent read! They have all the excitement of a thriller, while still making you think of deeper issues. I would recommend these books for anyone from their early teens through adulthood.
