Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Art Tucker - Dr. Arthur O. Tucker to his students at Delaware State University in Dover - is a botanist specializing in the identification and chemistry of plants of flavor, fragrance, and medicine. In his capacity as Research Professor and Director of the Claude E. Phillips Herbarium, he has had the fortunate opportunity to work with all age groups, from young children to retirees, and a wide variety of ethnic groups to help them better appreciate herbs. As an advisor and writer for numerous scientific and popular gardening magazines, Art has helped untold numbers grow healthier herbs, bring in better harvests, and simply enjoy herbal flavors and fragrances more fully. DeBaggio's Herb Farm and Nursery, founded by Thomas DeBaggio in Arlington, VA in 1975 and now located in Chantilly, VA, is a celebration of herbs both classic and new - and the people who love them. DeBaggio wrote extensively for leading gardening and herb magazines, including The Herb Companion until diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 1999. He is also the author of Growing Herbs from Seed Cutting and Root: An Adventure in Small Miracles, and, with Susan Belsinger, The Basil Book: An Herb Lover's Guide. In 2000, DeBaggio passed his legacy on to his son, Francesco and wrote two books on his experiences with the early stages of his disease.

This revised Encyclopedia of Herbs is the ultimate reference on herbs. It is authoritative, detailed and encompasses everything you will want to know about over 500 herbs. Some sections are truly not for the home gardener but more for scientists amd nurserymen. But there is plenty of useful guidance for the home gardener interested in growing herbs and generally learning more about the requirements and conditions necessary for growing herbs and using herbs. There are interesting stories and histories at the beginning of each herb section. Fun to enjoy and use on many different levels.

I purchased this book because of it's listings of chemical compounds present in the essential oils of particular culinary herbs. They greatly exceed the details included in McGee's book entitled "On Food and Cooking". Initially, I was disappointed by my readings. I found a few statistical errors on the charts describing the ideal moisture and PH of particular plants, and an error in the choice of the Monotropa uniflora as an example of a saprophytic plant. This plant is clearly a parasite of various members of the Russula and Lactarius genera. I am documenting the mistakes that I discover and will attempt to contact Dr. Tucker to present my findings. Hopefully, any future additions of this book can be revised accordingly.

All this being said; I am still quite impressed with the results. It turns out that Mr. Debaggio was diagnosed with Alzheimer's syndrome in 1997. The book was completed in the year 2000. I would not be surprised if some of the errors were a result of this. For now, I believe that this book would be a great reference for home gardeners, nurserymen, and cooks, but needs a little work before I would feel comfortable citing it in academic papers. I will have to leave a more complete review once I finish reading.

This book is the one of the best in understanding all the different varieties of herbs that are out there. A book that does not necessarily tell how to use them, but discusses the differences between each of the varieties and what one should look for when getting these herbs. The only drawback is that there are not very many pictures.
