During the past decade there has been an explosion in computation and information technology. With it have come vast amounts of data in a variety of fields such as medicine, biology, finance, and marketing. The challenge of understanding these data has led to the development of new tools in the field of statistics, and spawned new areas such as data mining, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Many of these tools have common underpinnings but are often expressed with different terminology. This book describes the important ideas in these areas in a common conceptual framework. While the approach is statistical, the emphasis is on concepts rather than mathematics. Many examples are given, with a liberal use of color graphics. It should be a valuable resource for statisticians and anyone interested in data mining in science or industry. The book’s coverage is broad, from supervised learning (prediction) to unsupervised learning. The many topics include neural networks, support vector machines, classification trees and boosting---the first comprehensive treatment of this topic in any book.

This major new edition features many topics not covered in the original, including graphical models, random forests, ensemble methods, least angle regression & path algorithms for the lasso, non-negative matrix factorization, and spectral clustering. There is also a chapter on methods for “wide” data (p bigger than n), including multiple testing and false discovery rates.

Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, and Jerome Friedman are professors of statistics at Stanford University. They are prominent researchers in this area: Hastie and Tibshirani developed generalized additive models and wrote a popular book of that title. Hastie co-developed much of the statistical modeling software and environment in R/S-PLUS and invented principal curves and surfaces. Tibshirani proposed the lasso and is co-author of the very successful An Introduction to the Bootstrap. Friedman is the co-inventor of many data-mining tools including CART, MARS, projection pursuit and gradient boosting.

Dieses Buch bietet einen guten und weiten Überblick über klassische und neuere Verfahren der Statistik und Informatik im Bereich des Lernens aus Daten.

So werden Verfahren aus dem überwachten Lernen (also bei gegebenen Einfluss- und Zielgrößen) wie Lineare Regression, Diskriminanzanalyse, aber auch Neuronale Netze oder Support Vector Machines vorgestellt. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir das Kapitel zur Modellbewertung und -selektion, welches (kurz) auf Kreuzvalidierung und Bootstrapping eingeht.

Das letzte Kapitel befasst sich mit Methoden des unüberwachten Lernens (Daten lassen sich nicht in Eingänge und Ausgänge aufteilen). Hier werden Methoden wie Hauptkomponentenanalyse und Clusterverfahren vorgestellt, aber auch das sehr interessante Thema der Assoziationsregeln zur Warenkorbanalyse behandelt.

Dem Buch ein sehr guter Kompromiss zwischen theoretischen Darstellungen und praktischen Anwendungen gelungen. So sind fast alle Verfahren durch Beispiele illustriert und oft wird ein Vergleich verschiedener Verfahren anhand der Beispiele durchgeführt.

Die vorhandene Theorie verlangt von dem Leser ein solides Basiswissen (Vordiplom Mathematik/Statistik empfehlenswert) in Wahrscheinlichkeits- und Matrizenrechnung, Analysis und darauf basierend der Schätztheorie.

Für mich ist dieses Buch oft die erste Anlaufstelle auf der Suche nach Verfahren zur Beantwortung von Data-Mining-Fragen oder einfach nur um altes Wissen aufzufrischen.

Ich verwende das Buch gelegentlich als "Nachschlagwerk" v.a. wegen seiner Vollstaendigkeit. Die Einfuehrungskapitel sind nicht (sehr) hilfreich. Zum Lernen wuerde ich eindeutig Bishop und/oder Mackay empfehlen.

Die Autoren praesentieren einen aktuellen und fundierten Ueberblick zu den wichtigsten Methoden der statistischen Klassifikation und zu statistischen Lernverfahren. Sogar fuer Einsteiger in die Materie zu empfehlen, wenn die noetigen mathematischen Grundlagen (lin. Algebra und Statistik) bekannt sind.

Dieses Buch hilft jemandem der die Materie nicht kennt überhaupt nicht weiter. Es ist völlig ungeeignet um sich die Methoden anzueignen. Bereits die ersten Formeln im Buch sind unglaublich komplex. Herleitungen, welche über mehrere Seiten gehen würden, werden dem Leser nur skizzenhaft in drei Zeilen hingeworfen, sodass ein tieferes Verständnis nur mit dem Buch nicht möglich ist.

Die kryptischen Erklärungen und teilweise konfusen Darstellungen helfen nur bedingt weiter. Der Index am Ende ist nicht vollständig.

Insbesondere das zweite Kapitel ist schlicht völlig unverständlich geschrieben. Die Notation innerhalb des Buches wechselt.

Zu empfehlen ist dieses Buch wohl nur denjenigen, die schon Experten im Bereich Machine Learning / Statistical Learning sind, mit den Methoden eine Weile gearbeitet haben und nur noch mal ein paar Dinge auffrischen wollen. Für Studenten, die sich in das Thema einarbeiten wollen, ist es jedenfalls meiner Meinung nach völlig ungeeignet.
