I must admit, it is in my opinion getting more and more difficult to find a really complex and thought provoking fantasy to read. "The Darkness That Comes Before" however has everything what you could wish for if you want to be drawn into a story and become involved in the emotions portrayed through its many characters.
This book is similar in its vast descriptive volume to Steven Erikkson and the "Malazan Book of the Fallen"...no surprise there since the book was soundly endorsed by the author. The story begins with a brief background history of what went before, joining the flow of the present with ease it goes on to describe the pivotal character of the book, "Kellhus Anasurimbor". This character is following the trend in not being able to determine whether he is "good" or "evil". In fact all central characters portray the "real" emotions which it is easy to relate to. The battle scenes, whether large or small are very well described indeed, with a real sense of the fickleness which can decide a battle one way or another. One word of caution though, this book is not for the fainthearted....the mortality rate is rather huge...and the associated descriptions do not leave much to the imagination. The topic of sorcery is also very well dealt with..as is the description of the ultimate enemy, the "No-God" which is reminicsent of the all-encompassing evil in Tolkiens books.
All in all this book is absolutely worth reading...it ranks right up there with Erikkson, R.R.Martin etc. You will not regret it in any way.

"The Darkness That Comes Before" is the opening sequence to a trilogy of trilogies. That alone can scare a reader. But this book stands firmly on its own strength and is a very fulfilling read. Having said that, this is a harsh book. The characters suffer. This world is a unforgiving place. The main topic is a holy war and holy wars are more often than not savage things to behold.
The Three Seas have a distinct arabian flavour, but without any silly Djinn. Rather it is the opressiveness of the heat, the dust on the roads, the wrinkled skin of its protagonists that further the impression. In terms of style T"he Darkness That Comes Before" reminds one of Steve Eriksons "Deadhouse Gates".
There are some dark sides to this book. First and foremost is the immense amount of sexual violence in this book. While I understand the authors desire to portrait a realistic world this book borders on being misogynist. When the mass-rape of twelve women is mentioned with barely a glance and the story continues without any hesitation it can turn ones stomach. Also only two of the major characters are women - one a whore, the other the emporers mother. This misrepresentation of women really soured the book for me. It is the only reason, why I did not give it five stars.
Overall this is a strong book by a new voice with a distinct flavour. A little less sexual violence and it would have been a five star review.

Liest sich nicht grade leicht wie Joe Abercrombie's "The Blade Itself"-Reihe was jedoch dem Buch einen gewissen Reiz gibt. Gut find ich auch, dass es im Buch weniger Magie und Hexerei gibt, sich daher aber mehr in philosophische zieht. Natürlich sind die Charaktere auch tiefsinnig beschrieben. Grade D. Achamian, der der "Held" zu sein scheint, ist irgendwie voll der Looser xD
Scott Bakker's einzigartiger Schreibstil lässt das Buch (für mich) aus dem Fantasy- Genre herausstechen, was es sehr lesenswertes macht.
