Song of Susannah continues directly from the almost literally cliff-hanging epilogue to Wolves of the Calla. As ever with such series, this is not the place to begin and new readers are strongly advised to start with volume one, The Gunslinger.
Meanwhile the penultimate instalment in the Dark Tower septet follows three interlocked storylines. Roland and Eddie in New England, where they undergo the firestorm of the book’s only major action set-piece, Jake and Father Callahan hot in pursuit of Susannah in New York, and Susannah herself, together with her alter ego Mia, struggling with probably the strangest pregnancy in all fiction. Her travails certainly make the New York horrors of Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby seem almost mundane. The novel is not complete in itself, but leads to a duel climax-cliffhanger leading directly into the final volume, The Dark Tower.
While the journey itself is compelling and the finale riveting, it is Stephen King’s imaginative boldness which make this episode so remarkable. Stories about storytelling have become increasingly common in modern fiction, with books within books and fictional authors being central to such metafictions as Christopher Priest’s The Affirmation and Jonathan Carroll’s The Land of Laughs. Song of Susannah is the second to last book (the sixth) in The Dark Tower series. Our friends (Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy) are getting closer to their goal that is The Dark Tower.
After having fought off the wolves of the Calla in book 5, Susannah flees, led by Mia and imprisoned in her own body, through the door leading to New York of 1999. Mia/Susannah is pregnant and is ready to have the baby, or whatever it is that is growing inside her/them.
Trying to follow Mia back to the "real" world, Roland, Eddie, Jake and Father Callahan are divided and are sent to different places in different times. Roland and Eddie end up where Calvin Tower and Aaron Deepneau were sent in Book 5 while Jake and Father Callahan are hot on Susannah's trail. The ka-tet now needs to get both the vacant lot and Susannah or her baby before it's too late and the Dark Tower collapses.
Song of Susannah is not the best of the 6 books so far, but finishes a good average. That Stephen King chooses to write himself into the book and give himself such a big role in it all might seem strange and might give the reader the initial feeling of a pathetic try to be funny; in the end, however, the story gathers well and the threads all merge into a chaotic but well-thought mixture of "ka" and coincidence.
Although... Coincidence has been cancelled.
Ka rules it all and our friends all move one step closer to The Dark Tower. My tip will be that in the seventh and last book in the series we will be staying in New York of 1999 but a little short of characters... Who will be staying until the end is up to you to find out - in "Song of Susannah".

Schon erstaunlich, wie anders jedes der 7 Bücher der Reihe ist und wie der rote Faden doch erkennbar ist. Der Sprung macht aber Spass. Eigentlich überflüssig, was zu diesem Buch zu sagen- wenn man die anderen Bücher nicht gelesen hat, versteht mann eh nicht, worum es geht, aber wenn man, wovon man ausgeht, "wolfes of Calla" gerade gelesen hat, will man nicht in voraus wissen, was passiert. In einem Satz die Bewertung des Buches: "Die Kolonne zieht weiter".
Ich lese die Bücher auf Englisch, da da der "King" wirklich beeindruckend ist- nichts gegen die Übersetzer, aber ich habe ein Paar Bücher in beiden Sprachen gelesen und auf Englisch ist es wirklich besser. Man hat Spass und, wenn man nicht gut Englisch kann, man lernt auch gleichzeitig eine Fremdsprache. Tipp: Bücher auf Englisch gibt es nicht überall und auch nicht in guter Auswahl. Englische Bücher, in großer Auswahl und zu wirklich guten Preisen gibt es auf Amazon.
