Frank Muller, the recognized virtuoso of audiobook narration (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption), takes on Stephen King's Goliath tale of sorcerers, time travelers, and sci-fi love. Totaling more than 27 hours and spanning 18 cassettes, Wizard and Glass requires the listener to love Muller's Hannibal Lecter-like voice--either that or suffer in audio hell for the equivalent of three full working days. While some might find his breathy staccatos irritating at best, others will find his voice the perfect accompaniment to King's creepy characters and nightmarish plots. (Running time: 27 hours, 18 cassettes)

Wizard and Glass, the fourth episode in King's white-hot Dark Tower series, is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that contains a post-apocalyptic Western love story twice as long. It begins with the series' star, world-weary Roland, and his world-hopping posse (an ex-junkie, a child, a plucky woman in a wheelchair, and a talking dog-like pet named Oy the Bumbler) trapped aboard a runaway train. The train is a psychotic multiple personality that intends to commit suicide with them at 800 m.p.h.--unless Roland and pals can outwit it in a riddling contest. It's a great race, for the mind and pulse. Films should be this good. Then comes a 567- page flashback about Roland at age 14. It's a well-marbled but meaty tale. Roland and two teenage friends must rescue his first love from the dirty old drooling mayor of a post-apocalyptic cowboy town, thwart a civil war by blowing up oil tanks, and seize an all-seeing crystal ball from Rhea, a vampire witch. The love scenes are startlingly prominent and earthier than most romance novels (they kiss until blood trickles from her lip).

After an epic battle ending in a box canyon to end all box canyons, we're back with grizzled, grown-up Roland and the train-wreck survivors in a parallel world: Kansas in 1986, after a plague. The finale is a weird fantasy takeoff on The Wizard of Oz Some readers will feel that the latest novel in King's most ambitious series has too many pages--almost 800--but few will deny it's a page-turner.

4.0 von 5 Sternen The story of Roland's past 5. Juli 2004
Format:Taschenbuch
Wizard and Glass is a very different book compared to the first three of the Dark Tower series. Over 700 pages, our friends Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy don't get much more than a few steps closer to their goal; the Dark Tower. Instead, the entire book is devoted to the story of Roland's first love; an experience that would mark him for the remainder of his life.
When Roland was 14 years old, he was sent away by his father together with Cuthbert and Alain, his two best Gunslinger friends. They were sent to the Barony of Mejis, where Roland meets Susan Delgado, a girl of 16, promised to another man. They fall in love and as always in stories of this kind, it leads to problems. Mejis is a small place where everybody knows everybody and seducing the gilly of the mayor is not an easy thing to hide from the public.
The world as Roland knows it is on the verge of a great war, and his home land, Gilead, will be crushed unless the three friends do something to stop the "Good Man"'s allies that live in Mejis. The allies' leader turns out to be a failed gunslinger also taught and trained by the people Roland and his friends know from their own gunslinger lessons back home. It will therefore not be an easy tasks to perform their self-appointed task of saving the world from the Good Man.
The story told in this book is told by Roland as his ka-tet rests on a cataclysmic version of the Kansas turnpike along the path of the Beam. It tells the readers (and his friends) why he has become the person he is. The love for and loss of Susan left great holes within and contributed to the hard and impenetrable gunslinger we know him to be.
Wizard and Glass ends with a huge confession from Roland's part and his past that matters to the readers of the Dark Tower has now been told.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best one yet. 22. Oktober 1998

This was a perfectly beautiful book--the story was completely wonderful and gave much needed character development to the character this entire series is founded on, Roland of Gilead. I usually detest Stephen King and his entire genre of trash horror paperback novels, but the novels he writes that are not horror are strictly beautiful--a friend got me to read "Eyes of the Dragon" years ago, and then another friend started me on "The Gunslinger" knowing I hated Stephen King, and gloated when he caught me reading "The Drawing of the Three" and then got me "The Wastelands" from the library and lent me his copy of "Wizard and Glass." I recommend the series highly--Stephen King notes that each Dark Tower book takes several years to write, and that there are three more coming--this means that I will be nearly thirty by the time it is complete, and this is the only frustrating thing about the whole business--I wish my friend hadn't let me start until it was all done.

5.0 von 5 Sternen You like/You hate it 30. Januar 1998

It isn't Faulkner, it isn't Twain, it isn't Tolkien, it isn't Lewis, it isn't L'Amour. It's King. And if there is ONE thing we KNOW about Stephen King, it is that we NEVER know quite what to expect. And so it was with the fourth installment of the Dark Tower series. We just weren't quite sure what to expect. Therefore, we aren't quite sure how to react. I liked this book. It didn't change my way of thinking or my way of life (hence-- no 10). But I found it to be a well crafted story set in a semi-western/sci-fi world. I liked the characters, the action (little though it was, which was fine) but most of all I liked the vividness of the imagery used. Now, that sounds artsy, and I'm not much of an artsy person, but King's use of words in this is amazing. The love story is compellingly romantic without seeming trivial. And then there is the sense of foreboding doom. Inevitably, we know that most of the characters will die (a la the Stand, et al) but that Roland lives and endures much pain. I think some people are wrong when they think this didn't shed any light on the main story (oh, yeah, that whole quest thing). If anything we can realize the importance of this Dark Tower (whatever and wherever it may be). If you dislike love stories and westerns, skip the middle 500 pages. I don't think King will mind. It seems to me that this series is more for him than it is for the reader. I'm right there with him cheering him on, whether he knows it or not. This is an excellent book. If you just want the quest, stick with the first 100 pages and the last 75 pages. That is the minimum requirement. If you do decide to read the middle part, don't just read-- experience it. It is the story that is willing to draw you in and make you a part of it. Be a part of it.

So do we pass the ghosts that haunt us later in our lives; they sit undramatically by the roadside like poor beggars, and we see them only from the corners of our eyes, if we see them at all. Yet they do wait, and when we have passed, they gather up their bundles of memory and fall in behind, treading in our footsteps and catching up, little by little. "e;
