Set in the late 1960s and 1970s, "The Dark-Eyed Girls" tells the story of three friends, Liv, Katherine and Rachel, and their changing relationships over the years. Liv, the book's central character, is romantic and looking for love. Katherine is envious of others' good fortune, hungry for experience and determined to avoid the domesticity that has, in her eyes, enslaved her mother. Only Rachel, the beautiful only child of wealthy parents, seems to want for nothing. Then a terrible tragedy occurs, and the girls' friendship is altered forever...

It's the story of three young girls in the years 1960 - 78 in Great Britain. At school-time they are inseparable friends, grown-up their lives and characters develop quite differently, but after all they can always rely on each other.
It's the skill of Judith Lennox to make us deeply interested in their lives. We get to love good, gentle Liv and to suffer with her, to admire pragmatic intelligent Catherine and to be horrified at the tragedy of sweet Rachel's life.
Like in her other books Judith Lennox has written light fiction at its best. You can't stop reading.

Three young girls grow up together in a small English village and keep in touch as they grow older, even though their life paths veer in very different directions. Sweet, gentle Liv marries what she sees as the man of her dreams, only to find herself locked into a dark, possessive relationship. Katherine had always sworn off marriage and domesticity after seeing the soul crushed out of her mother by the demands of husband and family and Rachel who marries young and against her father's wishes. The story of their young lives and how they interconnect is a nice little read (which sounds as if I'm damning it with faint praise), not earth shattering but pleasant.
