The title The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (or the curious incident of the dog in the night-time as it appears within the book) is an appropriate one for Mark Haddon's ingenious novel both because of its reference to that most obsessive and fact-obsessed of detectives, Sherlock Holmes, and because its lower-case letters indicate something important about its narrator.
Christopher is an intelligent youth who lives in the functional hinterland of autism--every day is an investigation for him because of all the aspects of human life that he does not quite get. When the dog next door is killed with a garden fork, Christopher becomes quietly persistent in his desire to find out what has happened and tugs away at the world around him until a lot of secrets unravel messily.
Haddon makes an intelligent stab at how it feels to, for example, not know how to read the faces of the people around you, to be perpetually spooked by certain colours and certain levels of noise, to hate being touched to the point of violent reaction. Mark Haddon's bitterly funny debut novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a murder mystery of sorts--one told by an autistic version of Adrian Mole. Fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is mathematically gifted and socially hopeless, raised in a working-class home by parents who can barely cope with their child's quirks. He takes everything that he sees (or is told) at face value, and is unable to sort out the strange behavior of his elders and peers.
Late one night, Christopher comes across his neighbor's poodle, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork. Wellington's owner finds him cradling her dead dog in his arms, and has him arrested. After spending a night in jail, Christopher resolves--against the objection of his father and neighbors--to discover just who has murdered Wellington. He is encouraged by Siobhan, a social worker at his school, to write a book about his investigations, and the result--quirkily illustrated, with each chapter given its own prime number--is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
Haddon's novel is a startling performance. This is the sort of book that could turn condescending, or exploitative, or overly sentimental, or grossly tasteless very easily, but Haddon navigates those dangers with a sureness of touch that is extremely rare among first-time novelists. Der in Oxford lebende Mark Haddon hat mit diesem Buch ein kleines Meisterwerk geschaffen. Die Geschichte ist aus der Sicht des 15jährigen Jungen Christopher geschrieben, der aufgrund seiner autistischen Veranlagung zwar sehr gut in Mathe und Physik ist, jedes Land der Welt inkl. Hauptstadt kennt und ein sehr gutes Erinnerungsvermögen hat, aber nicht fähig ist, menschliche Emotionen zu verstehen. Dieser Junge findet eines Tages den Hund der Nachbarin getötet vor und beschließt, diesen "Kriminalfall" aufzuklären und darüber dieses Buch zu schreiben.
Das Buch ist in kleine Kapitel eingteilt. Die ersten fünf Kapitel sind jedoch nicht die Kapitel 1,2,3,4,5 usw. sondern die Kapitel 2,3,5,7,11 - denn Christopher mag Primzahlen. Es sind diese Details, die das Buch nicht nur interessant, sondern höchst originell und zu Teilen sehr amüsant machen. Man sollte jedoch nicht glauben, dass es sich um ein ausschließlich lustiges Buch handelt. Die Gedankengänge Christophers sind nämlich keineswegs ausschließlich erheiternd oder leicht zu verdauen. So offenbart der Junge, dass es einer seiner schönsten Träume ist, sich vorzustellen, dass alle Menschen auf der Welt außer ihm tot wären (inkl. seiner Elern). Dann würde ihn niemand mehr etwas fragen und es wäre nicht alles voller Menschen - denn Christopher hasst Menschenmengen. Sein autistisch bedinger und oft schockierend bedingungsloser Egoismus ist ein ebenso prägendes Element wie seine Ausführungen über mathematische Probleme und auf puren Fakten basierenden Schlussfolgerungen.
Ironisch genug: Das Buch, das aus der Sicht eines Jungen geschrieben ist, der nicht fähig ist, Emotionen wahrzunehmen, ist in höchsten Maße emotional. Es belustigt, belehrt und schockiert den Leser gleichermaßen.

Curious Incident is an expertly written book. I was hooked to this book the moment I started reading it. Within three hours, I was at the end of the last page. It was so touching. Told through the eyes of a boy who suffers from autism, the book captured our failings as humans, the strength of faith, the innocence of childhood, the things we take for granted in our lives, the hopes we cling to, the dreams we want to realize and the love we aspire for in our lives.
Intriguing as it may sound; I was fascinating by the unusual chapter numbering, the use of diagrams, statistics and the use of a first person narrator. It was clever and achieved its desired result of stirring curiosity and eventually keeping the reader hooked. It is a very creative style of writing. In fact, it is a unique reading experience.
By trying to get into the mind of the boy in his narration, I could easily understand his parents who had to deal with his problems constantly. I recommend this novel as a good, enjoyable read and a unique diversion from the other styles of writings that are in the market.Also recommended: THE UNION MOUJIK, THE USURPER AND OTHER STORIES, DUBLINERS, DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE

This novel is one of the most unusual that I have ever read. I initially gauged its success by how well emotionally engaged I was by the story. For the first half, I was gripped . . . but the book tailed off from there. If I only looked at the book from that perspective, I would grade it a 3. But the book also contains interesting references to science and math that reminded me of John Paulos's books on how a mathematician looks at the world. Those parts I rated at a 5. So the two perspectives came out to a 4. But if you don't particularly like math or science, this will be an average novel for you before you are done.
The premise is simple. Fifteen-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone is autistic with many emotional complications (including not being able to read others' emotions) . . . and also has a brilliant mind for logic. Because of his fascinating experiences, his teacher, Siobhan encourages him to write a book . . . which is this one.
It's easy to think of Christopher as much younger than he is . . . with problems concerning strangers, others touching him, and wetting himself. But then the brilliant mind comes out, and you feel like you are in contact with a professor. The combination is fascinating in the first half of the book as Christopher tries to find out who stuck a pitchfork through the neighbor's dog. As a twist on The Hound of the Baskervilles, that part of the book is irresistible.
Once that mystery is solved, the book seems to veer off into less realistic and less emotionally compelling material. Christopher's character was no longer completely believable to me. The writing seemed more like an exercise by an author than Christopher's own as the "author" of this book.
I treasured though those parts of the book that help me understand how an autistic person might view the world. It reminded me of those jumbled letters and reversed numbers on cards that teachers show to simulate what dyslexia is like for those who are not dyslexic. Such journeys in another's footsteps are rewarding and I encourage you to seek them out.
