Kurzbeschreibung

NOT ONLY STRANGER THAN YOU IMAGINE, STRANGER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE

In a distant future when humans no longer need spaceships, but hurtle between the stars faster than light, propelled and protected by implants in their bodies, the galaxy has been divided between two battling factions who contend for dominance by economic maneuvering. Each side is determined to overwhelm the other, and is likely to abandon the "Econo-War" for a genuine shooting war if it thinks that defeat is imminent. Only one thing can avert the looming disaster: a talisman of great, almost supernatural power which has been lost for millennia on a minor world called Earth.

Here, The Econo-War is collected in one continuous novel-length narrative for the first time, along with other dazzling visions of future worlds: A planet where well-meaning busybodies from Earth try to "cure" the inhabitants of their craving for the exotic drug chocolate ... another planet where insects dimly recall myths of the humans who gave them intelligence before departing for the stars, and wonder if the strange creatures will ever return ... a brilliant concert pianist whose twin is the target of an inexplicable assassination plot which he must foil—because he and his "twin" share the same brain ... an intelligent weapon which was instructed billions of years ago to obliterate a race, but whose mission was frustrated by a slight malfunction—until now . . . and much more by a unique and original master of science fiction adventure.

"In the 1960s, Myers' stories came pouring out—almost every one of them excellent, ranging from the chilling to some of the wittiest science fiction stones ever written." —Eric Flint and Guy Gordon

Synopsis

A future war is being fought across the galaxy and the key to victory can be found on the legendary lost world where humanity originated - Earth. But even if the lost home world can be found, there may be no place for humans on it anymore. The once-lowly creatures who are now the sole inhabitants, and which mankind dominated in ages past, have been raised to a high level of intelligence and the future they plan is not one with any room for the former rulers of the planet. This future saga is here assembled for the first time, as well as several bonus short novels in a huge volume of highly original space adventure.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful sci-fi anthology 19. Januar 2013
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This collection of shorter stories was written several decades ago. It could have been written yesterday. There is an interesting and tragic back story for the author, which is worthwhile following up. The anthology consists of several unrelated stories, and a collection with common protagonists spanning time and space. The stories explore political changes written in the light of the cold war era, and the effects of time on humanity's development. A very worthwhile read.

Brilliantly written and superbly staged from the short stories to the books about the econowar. Wish he had written more. None the less I am grateful to have found this treasure of literary genius. I enjoyed every word.

2.0 von 5 Sternen A mixed bag of cool scifi and rape 8. März 2014
Von Madeline Spencer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Some of these stories have truly fascinating and imaginative premises. I loved "The Creatures of Man", "Partner", and "Health Hazard". But the ideas in "The Chalice Cycle" about the culture of religion vs the culture of magic are interesting the way Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is interesting. The author attempts to explain women's attitudes about sex in a plausible but incredibly simplistic and callous way, describing women as confused by conflicting ideas that their bodies are both sacred and dirty, but then implying that if it weren't for this conflict women would never say no to sex.
The main character rapes a woman who is then "cured" of the influence of religion and immediately falls in love with him. And I do mean immediately-- with the help of magic, we get from from "She lay there in comatose apathy, too exhausted to cry," to her kissing him and giggling and saying she wants him to do it again, in half an hour. And did I mention that she's only an adult woman in outward appearance, she's actually a six year old child who was cursed to age rapidly? And the main character knows perfectly well that her mind is not as adult as her body? I expect misogyny from the 1960s; I don't expect child rape.
I don't understand how the editors can just ignore this to go on about what a fascinating cycle of stories this is.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Thank you Mr. Flint and Mr. Gordon for giving us Mr. Myers 26. Februar 2013
Von MsAnnie - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I usually do not take time to read short Science Fiction stories because I want more from them. I read the introduction that Mr. Flint and Mr. Gordon put together. Since I have a lot of respect for Mr. Flint, I had to read on and see if Mr. Myers was that good. I haven't even finished the book/stories and I'm totally captured. What a loss to us that Mr. Myers only wrote for a few years. He was so good, that I'm almost glad they are short stories. Otherwise, I would get nothing accomplished but reading. As it is, it is difficult for me to put down "The Creatures of Man" without completing each story - first. So far, his stories makes me dream, dreams of futures worth exploring. For Mr. Flint and Mr. Gordon, I can say that I will remember Howard L Myers, and I am grateful for your bring him out of obscurity. Mr. Myers imagination was brilliant. I think that the worlds he created could be expanded into even bigger things.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Hard science fiction in small delicious doses 13. August 2013
Von Jerry Nowlin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The Creatures of Man is free for the kindle. This book would be a bargain even if they charged for it. It contains a great series of 19 hard science fiction stories. Some short and some long. All worth reading.

None of the stories in this book are stinkers. They take place far into Earth's future. Can you imagine a butterfly with intelligence? Can you imagine a non-human telepathic intelligence that rules an entire planetary system? Can you imagine a future where money is in units of admiration? These stories should be read in order, because some follow the long standing econo-war between the Lontastan Federation and the Primgran Commonality. I enjoyed every tale. Very highly recommended.
