Sergey Shipov deals with the English Hedgehog which arises after White fianchettos his king's bishop, e.g. 1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 c5 3. Nf3 e6 4. g3 b6 5. Bg2 Bb7 6. 0-0 Be7, focusing on the two main replies 7. d4 and 7. Re1. After a historical introduction, the book is organized along White's various plans: quick attack on the d6 pawn, early exchange on f6 and so on. The Hedgehog is presented in complete games which Shipov analyzes in detail, often branching out into amazing variations. He does an outstanding job illustrating the balance between White's space advantage and Black's counterattacking potential. There is often a detailed assessment of the resulting endgames. The latest game in the book is Carlsen's Hedgehog win against Kramnik in 2008 (maybe Carlsen should stick to that opening:-). The annotations are very instructive and entertaining, although reading about the 'spiny woodland creature' 100 times can be a bit tiresome (probably Shipov's quirky style is difficult to translate). There is no variation index, which is consistent with the style of the book.
Recommended to strong players (>2000) who have the Hedgehog or the English opening in their repertoire; or indeed anyone who likes good chess books.
