A Comprehensive C3 Sicilian Study Guide for Lifelong 22. Juli 2012
Von Acklan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Being confused about how to respond accurately to all kinds of Sicilian variations, I decided to study C3 Sicilian and use it as my main weapon against Sicilian. Now I'd say it's so lucky for me to starting out C3 Sicilian through this mammoth best opening guide ever and I don't believe there will be a better C3 Sicilian study guide in even another decade. Why? Simply answer: all reasonable and good variations against the Alapin Sicilian are included in the book, and most importantly, there are over 500+ annotated games included in the book, which that most of them are brilliant games of the author GM Sveshnikov. Have you ever seen a more useful and complete (include over 500+ games?) opening study guide than this one? As far as all I know and all the chess books and materials I've looked at, I must say none of any other chess opening book can be compared with this one. After studied it for about 3 months and carefully examined around 60 games in the book, my score against Sicilian has been imaginably improve from about half and half to around 3/4. I'm currently rated around USCF 1850 but recently when I played against players rated above USCF 2000, my Alapin Sicilian had brought me a satisfactory score: 50 percent. I can definitely say this is the most helpful book for me to develop my opening+middlegame+endgame+tactics skill and brought me from an USCF 1700+ to 1800+ in 3 months.

I had a small chess library which including 40+ books; such as the Pirc in Black and White (by James Vigus), The English Opening I (by Mihail Marin), The Flexible French (by Viktor Moskalenko) are all useful good books. Yet, none of them can be compared to GM Sveshnikov's The Complete C3 Sicilian in terms of number of games including and the perfect order of variations. GM Evgeny Sveshinkov separates the book into two general sections: 2...d5&other variations and 2...Nf6 (the best reply to Alapin). GM Sveshnikov arranges hundreds of games reviewed in details after finish each complete lines review in 2...d5&others and 2...Nf6, which enables our readers to keep different variations clearly in mind and learn plenty of strong ideas and strategy through learning Sveshnikov's and other strong players' Alapin Sicilian games.

The bottom book title says "The Alapin Variation by its greatest Expert" and I can't agree more with it! My standpoint is not just based on GM Sveshnikov's over 70% score in his lifetime 600 tournament game, but is more built up after I studied 60 games of him in the book. If you have database, through searching you can find that in general, White doesn't hold very good score after 2.C3. However, that's just because too many players, including many masters, choose to use Alapin Sicilian as a surprised weapon only, in stead of study it in carefully. That's why it's no wonder in database in the C3 Sicilian, White has only scores a frustrated 50%. For sure as being rated around USCF 1850, even though I've kept studied hard in this great C3 Sicilian book, against USCF rated above 2200+ and play Alapin against them will still give me nearly 0 chance to win any game, but my recent score against USCF 2000-2200: 50% has really showed the power of this mammoth C3 Sicilian study guide. Now I've been a big fan of GM Sveshnikov and certainly love this The Complete C3 Sicilian book more than any other book I've ever read. In my last several journeys, I always brought this big guide with me and examined a game in it every night. It's no doubt a big treasure. Now I'm looking forward to finishing this book in one year, and I know it will still be my best weapon (though not the only weapon :) to help me to improve my USCF rating to 2000.

As this book's author, USSR former champion GM Evgeny Sveshnikov says in the preface:" I can definitely say that the move 2.c3 has fed me and my family for almost forty years," it's true that we can at least use this book to study and improve for fourteen years.

Get This Rare Jewel!! 5. Mai 2013
Von R. Tobias - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
In an opening that attracts more authors than any other, this book really stands out for many reasons as one of the most important of recent years. Firstly, the opening is a very important one that almost every serious player will play against and/or use at some important point of his chess career. Secondly, the author is a strong and very experienced GM. Very few opening books are written by such a prominent GM. Thirdly, he is an acknowledged expert on the system, having played it with great success for decades. In a time when so many opening books are stamped out by authors who rarely if ever play the opening they write about, this book is a rare and authoritative treat, a breath of fresh air! Lastly, the book is very comprehensive and well written. There are many test positions to sharpen both your tactical and positional sense. The book is replete with Sveshnikov's pointers and tips about various lines. Unlike some books that focus virtually solely on main lines, the author spends considerable time going over side lines that are seen in typical club and tournament play. Having studied this material, rather than being buffaloed by an odd move, and forced to chew up precious clock time trying to figure out a reply, you will have the confidence that comes from knowing that a move is not at all dangerous, or is even inferior. Knowledge is power, and mastering this book will give you a powerful reply to the Sicilian! This book is not for beginners, however, as it is sprawling and long and complex. But for the serious tournament player, up to IM strength, or possibly even GM strength, if you play 1.e4 or answer it with the Sicilian, you will want to have this book for the wealth of chess wisdom it contains. BTW, a case can be made for the c3 Sicilian that White's results are in no way inferior to results gained from using the Open Sicilian. Plus, your theoretical work is cut down by focusing on the c3 Sicilian instead, and you can use that time to bolster other openings, endgames etc. Especially if you like more strategic play rather than the super-sharp and sacrificial play that marks so many lines of the Open Sicilian, the c3 Sicilian may be right for you! HIGHLY recommended.

Poor layout for a 'Complete' book 15. Januar 2014
Von K Sheldrick - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
To find a particular line, the 'Contents' page is virtually useless, it just mentions 2...d5 and 2...Nf6. There is an OK index which is a little more thorough but the book is not fun to scour through, looking for a particular line, as it is one of the worst laid out openings books I have and the only one where I actually give up sometimes trying to find a particular line among Sveshnikov's disorganised mess. Therefore I rate it 'One Star', and I've bought about 30 openings books over the last 20 years and am rated 2146 Fide. If you want to look up a line you'll use the index to narrow it down to somewhere in the book and then look through page by page for 30 pages, trying to find what you want. Whereas, any other opening book I have, I can find the line I want easily and within 10 seconds or so. This book should'nt be named 'The Complete c3 Sicilian' but, rather, 'Illustrative Games in the c3 Sicilian Lacking Full Analysis and Shoved in One after the Other'.

Murray Chandler's 'The Complete c3 Sicilian' is a well laid out book and a proper 'Complete' book - the lines are much more thorough too; that book is a 5 star book. Unfortunately, the book is from 1997 but is vastly superior to this one. For example, take the line 1. e4 c5 2. c3 Nf6 3. e5 Nd5 4. d4 cd 5. Bc4. Sveshnikov just gives 5...Qc7 as equalising (though the index is so incomplete I can't actually find that page now though I found it yesterday somewhere in the mishmash), whereas Chandler gives a full discussion of it.

I recommend buying Chandler's book instead. If you want to buy both books, that is fine too, as there are newer ideas in this one and some more illustrative ideas. But if you only want to buy only one book, buy the thorough one - the Chandler one, despite it being 13 years older than this one.

Simply beautiful! 8. März 2012
Von Andrew - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is simply beautiful. It contains engaging prose covering the history, development and current praxis of the Alapin. It covers the Alapin's historical development with games played by the old greats: Alapin himself, Nimzowitch, Alekhine, Andersson, Capablanca, Petrosian, Reti, Tarrasch and Tartakower. It covers modern developments by Fischer, Smyslov and co. And recent theory with Anand, Kasparov, Karpov and co. It is a massive 574 pages with 554 games for $25 USD. It is set out in a simple way covering the two main responses to 1.e4 c5 2.c3 - 2...d5 and 2...Nf6. It also covers less promising lines for Black. The detail is incredible. After an introduction of the history, developments and themes in the variation of each chapter, Sveshnikov covers numbers of lines through in-depth analysis of illustrative games. I can't say any more. If you don't want to engage your opponent in the Sicilian (which you shouldn't do unless you also play it as Black) then buy this book.
Essential middlegame text for the C3 Sicilian 30. November 2014
Von Roger Perry - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
The are several enthusiastic reviews that describe this book, so I will only comment briefly.

Sveshnikov's approach to opening books is unique, and I thank the publishers for allowing him that licence (I also have his volumes on the Advance French). The focus is on understanding the opening AND the resulting middle games through the study of complete games - this volume has about 600. On any sub-variation the author might provide half a dozen games. Only one may represent his recommended line of play, but all need to be absorbed to UNDERSTAND why some moves work and other don't, and the resulting middle game ideas. If you shortcut to just reading the recommended line you miss the point of the book. Therefore this book could really be re-titled "The Strategy of the C3 Sicilian".

The author also provides brief guides on the main variations, and what he believes are the best sequences. But these are intended as a guide to subsequent study of the relevant games, not an opening monograph. In addition there are also a collection of test positions. I notice that Sveshnikov himself often adopts less critical variations, I expect because of his understanding of the resulting positions.

I think one reviewer said this was a life-long guide and I agree. That is because it will become one of your key middle game texts for your life.

Two other books I recommend to have alongside:
- Baburin's book on isolated queen's pawn positions, which can arise in the C3 Sicilian - another key middle game reference (Sveshnikov provides a separate chapter on Q-side pawn majorities).
- Emm's starting out series book on the C3 Sicilian which nicely compliments Sveshnikov's chapters guides.
