Preaching, according to Bonhoeffer, is like offering an apple to child. The gospel is proclaimed, but for it to be received as gift depends on whether or not the hearer is in a position to do so. Offered here are thirty-one of Pastor Bonhoeffer’s sermons, in new English translations, which he preached at various times of the year and in a variety of different settings. Each is introduced by Bonhoeffer translator Isabel Best who also provides a brief biography of Bonhoeffer. The foreword is by Victoria J. Barnett, general editor of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works, English edition, published by Fortress Press, from which these sermons are selected.

In his preaching, Bonhoeffer’s strong, personal faith—the foundation for everything he did—shines in the darkness of Hitler’s Third Reich and in the church struggle against it. Though not overtly political, Bonhoeffer’s deep concern for the developments in his world is revealed in his sermons as he seeks to draw the listener into conversation with the promises and claims of the gospel—a conversation readers today are invited to join.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Deep theological thinking is is these sermons. 23. November 2012

i am challenged as a preacher, by these sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Obviously he has thought long and hard about the human condition in the light of the word which he faithfully preached. He takes time to expound the Word and match it to deal very charitably with the human condition and he does so with pastoral concern humility and love. I highly commend this work.

5.0 von 5 Sternen For the serious bible student 6. Dezember 2012

Although Bonhoffer's sermons were written in the thirties, the topics are pertinent to today's church and society. The sermons are both simpl and deep. They can be examined on many levels, from the newest Christian to a biblical scholar. I was particularly moved by the sermon on forgiveness. It is something we all struggle with, and he has a unique outlook. This is not "pop"theology or light reading. However, it is not as hard to read as his book on discipleship. I have bought several copies to share with my friends.

5.0 von 5 Sternen For the first time in English, here is a choice collection of Bonhoeffer's sermons 29. November 2012
Von Didaskalex - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
"At once scriptural and engaging the reader personally, the sermons also address public issues faced by those trying to live as Christians in the Third Reich. The enduring freshness and pertinence of the word of God in these human words will challenge and comfort readers now as then." --Clifford Green.

For the first time in English, here is a choice collection of Bonhoeffer's sermons. The Collected Sermons of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, is edited and introduced by Isabel Best, the translator of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works. Although these sermons can be found in the Bonhoeffer Works, yet they are easily accessible here, revealing his spirit just by reading through them. A sense of deep faith in Christ is serenely felt. They can serve as a good entry point for the novice reader of Bonhoeffer. The book also offers a brief but helpful introduction to Bonhoeffer's life.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the most oracular figures of neo-orthodox thought Christianity. There was less unanimity among German Protestant leaders, many of whom saw Bonhoeffer as a divisive figure, and overtly political. Bonhoeffer himself recognized this public dispute, as one factor in his decision to leave Germany for a parish in London, in 1933. He found fragile support for his views, even among friends, as he wrote to Karl Barth, and decided "to go for a while into the desert."

Given this history, Bonhoeffer's posthumous influence is all the more astonishing. His writings, letters and theological papers have a timeless and universal appeal, despite the fact that they were written in awkward circumstances. Bonhoeffer's thought has inspired several generations of German theologians, and touched many Christians as well. Fifty years after his death, he still has something to say to Christians. Bonhoeffer is an acknowledged mentor of John A. T. Robinson, Bishop of Woolwich, who exploited the "Letters and Papers from Prison."

Due to his early death, and its surrounding noise, with his theology still in development and flux, his influence was wide-reaching and his writings continue to drive scholarly inquiry. He has admirers from across the theological landscape, from conservative evangelicals to the "Death of God" theologians, who adore his Letters and Papers from Prison. His execution at the age of thirty-nine in a Nazi prison camp, because of his involvement in a coup plot against Hitler, has led to his being considered a modern Protestant hero saint by many.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Needed on every pastor's shelf and in every seminary 29. August 2013
Von Clint Walker - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
One of the first challenges I had when I continued to read deeply of theological and biblical scholarship after seminary is to not make my learning theoretical, but to make it practical. As I met with a few other guys to read Calvin's Institutes in a diner before we would start our day in service to the church once a month, I was reminded that Calvin and Luther were pastors as well as academics. Their theology was tried and tested and lived in the world with other believers.

Perhaps this is one reason I love The Collected Sermons of Bonhoeffer. Bonheoffer's sermons show a first class mind and theological intellect wrestling with communicating Biblical truth to every day people. Each of the sermons gives us examples of the depth of Bonhoeffer's thinking, but that thoughtful interaction with Scripture is communicated to people in their stations in life, relating to what they are going through. It is simply brilliant.

Isabel Best has also done an excellent job in compiling the Collected Sermons of Bonhoeffer in such a way as to tell us the story of Bonhoeffer as well. We see, as she shares sermons chronologically and strategically, a development in Bonhoeffer's thinking, his personal mission, and his ministry as a whole. We read his sermons in Barcelona, Berlin, London, and Finkenwald. We follow the life of Bonhoeffer through his sermons, and Best's skillful introductions to each one of them.

Since I have received this resource from Fortress Press to review, I have been patiently making my way through the text. Reading sermons as devotionals at times, I have personally been moved and challenged by Pastor Dietrich's preaching. And, on moments I need it, I will return once again to this fine book.

This is a resource needed on every pastor's bookshelf.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Superb addition to the many books by or about Bonhoeffer 11. April 2013
Von G. J. Blackburn - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
The majority of the books available today by or about this brilliant thinker are on significant themes and accounts of his theology and extraodinary life. Now we have in this volume an invaluable collection of practical homilies written by Bonhoeffer primarily for lay persons but from which seminarians, preachers and theologians will find encouragement and light for living out the Christian faith in any age.
